The Whereabouts of Woofstock 2012 in Toronto

(Updated March 29, 2014). Toronto’s Woofstock will move to Woodbine Park for May 24 & 25, 2014.  Woodbine Park is bounded by  Lake Shore Blvd East, Coxwell, Eastern Ave. and Northern Dancer. Bring your dog on the 501 Queen streetcar to Coxwell, or take the 22 Coxwell bus south from the Danforth subway line. Either way, walk south to the north-east corner of Woodbine Park in Toronto’s Eastern Beach community for Woofstock 2014.

(Updated May 25, 2013). Updated to note the 2013 Woofstock Toronto annual summer event at the St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood is June 8 & 9, 2013, from 10am to 6pm. It’s still free to attend, with or without a dog of your own. The location information (far below) still seems correct, so check there for directions to “Woof Fest”.

Competing for your attention on June 8 & 9, 2013 are the Beaches Arts & Crafts Show as well as the “2013 Muhtadi Drumming Festival at Woodbine Park in Toronto” and another “8 Fun or Charity Fitness Events in Toronto on June 9, 2013“.

Summer of 2012 Woofstock Toronto

Dog lovers have been eagerly awaiting the 2012 Woofstock in Toronto, coming June 9-10, 2012 in the St. Lawrence Market district. Admission is free for this BYOD (Bring Your Own Dog) event.

(Updated Aug. 4 & Oct. 26, 2012). Updated to note the Winter Woofstock Toronto 2012 in the next paragraph.

Winter Woofstock Toronto will be held November 17-18, 2012 in the Direct Energy Centre of the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition). The venue is open from 10am through 6pm. Please visit the official site, above, for more details about admission and schedule. Note that a 2-day pass costs $8 online and $10 at the door, according to the print ad.

On Oct. 26, I just saw a half-page ad in the Toronto Star for Winter Woofstock. With TorStar, Toronto.com and CityTV as sponsors, they don’t need my help to get their information out. I notice with interest that they feature a “breakfast with Santa” in their agenda, and again invite you to bring your dog along for the adventure.

To Attend Summer Woofstock 2012 in Toronto

The first event on Saturday June 9 starts at 9am in Berczy Park. “Over the Rainbow…” has a long title to introduce a 10 week talent audition series. It sounds like a mashed-up canine version of “So you think your dog has talent and could be an idol, Canada“. It also could be great fun for the audience.

Saturday’s final event is the second “Purina Pro Plan Dog Stars” show. It’s their fourth show of the day, beginning at 5:30pm.

Sunday June 10 has a later start, with Purina’s professional dogs returning to the stage at 10:30am. They close the festivities with their eighth show at 5:30pm.

Perhaps the really important item is the Veterinary Emergency Clinic, or VEC, at Front and Jarvis streets. They will administer first aid to stricken canines during Woofstock.

Other events run during each day; some encourage your participation, while others might be oriented to spectators.

Location and TTC Information for Woofstock 2012 in Toronto

The key location is Berczy Park, the triangle bounded by Front Street, Wellington Street and Scott Street. Church Street intersects the eastern end of this triangle.

Apparently, Woofstock will take over parts of Church and Market streets south of Front, and Front Street from perhaps Yonge to Jarvis, where the St. Lawrence Market abides.

The main stage is towards the east end of Berczy Park.

The best Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) bets are the 504 King streetcar or the Union Station subway stop. You might consider the 75 Sherbourne bus south from the Bloor/Danforth subway, although it’s not clear how this service might be affected by Woofstock itself.

Regardless of whether Front St. is closed by construction near Union Station, this always seems like an area for tourists to walk or transit, rather than to drive.

Those at least eighteen years old may phone (416) 234-9663 to offer themselves as volunteers. Again, I have no idea whether they still need anyone.

Alternative June Events in Toronto

Several other early summer Toronto events compete directly for the same weekend, but that cannot be helped.

My Double Double Picks for Luminato 2012 in Toronto

Toronto’s “Festival Luminato“, or “Luminato 6” as the 2012 version is called, does not require publicity from me; not with L’Oréal as the major sponsor.

That leaves me free to point out a pair of paired events, or “double double” as those who frequent Tim Horton’s would say.

Here are the quick facts about Luminato 2012. The dates are June 8-17, 2012. Follow the first link, above, to pay online, or call (416) 368-4849. The 24 venues include Pearson Airport, several libraries and the Enwave Theatre at Harbourfront.

Regardless of the calendar, I’d label a festival in June as part of “Toronto events summer“.

Bountiful Beethoven at the 2012 Luminato Festival

One featured event is “Stewart Goodyear: The Beethoven Marathon” on June 9th.

The word “marathon” caught my attention, of course; to a runner, it means running 42.2Km.

Mr. Goodyear plans to play “all 32 Beethoven sonatas, in the order they were composed, in one day”. He plans on playing for 10 hours! The schedule is 10am to 2pm; 3pm to 6:30pm; and 8:30 to 11:30pm.

The venue is Koerner Hall at 273 Bloor St. West.

The paired event is “Beethoven 1-32“, a visual interpretation by Jorinde Voigt. Head to the Royal Ontario Museum, or ROM, from June 2 through Oct. 8. This exhibit is included with your regular admission to the ROM.

Let’s note that male world class elite marathon runners finish in just over two hours. Here in Toronto, the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon has seen Ed Whitlock finish in under 3:16, at age 80. Even Fauja Singh finished in 8:25…let’s see any other 100-year-old men beat that! (See “Triumph and Tragedy at the 2011 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon“). Neither needed as long as Mr. Goodyear will take for his marathon.

An Opera for Einstein, with Bonus Explanation by the Perimeter Institute

Although Wilson and Glass first presented “Einstein on the Beach” in 1976, it should be an impressive opera, with something extra for dance lovers.

The dates are June 8, 9 and 10; the venue is the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts.

The second part of this double feature is “The Science of Einstein (on the Beach)“. This will only be presented once, on June 10 before the opera at the same venue. It’s a free bonus for anyone with a ticket to any of the Einstein operas, so be sure to pack the Sony Centre at 7:30.

Luminato Freebies and the DeHaan Disclaimer

“The best things in life are free”, but only two food activities are featured as “free” at Festival Luminato 6 in Toronto. These are:

  • “1000 Tastes of Toronto“…I wonder if President’s Choice is riffing on “Taste of the Danforth” and other “Taste of…” festivals? Note: free to attend at any of the venues, but pay $5 for one food item. Follow the link for the list of restaurants.
  • “Toronto Carretilla Initiative” is a visual display of culinary arts by Rainer Prohaska. More truly, this seems to be shopping carts and kitchens. Participation is available if you pre-register. Chase them through the previous link on June 9-10. They will be in David Pecaut Square on June 11-15 and 17; but at the Evergreen Brick Works on the 16th.

Many concerts, particularly at the “Hub”, are free. In fact, you can find free events by clicking on the “Free” button, and selecting each of the selections in the left-hand column. My mistake was only picking on the “Food” category, thinking that I’d exhausted all the freebies. Surely none of my readers would have been so foolish.

Alternative Toronto Events and a Disclaimer

This coming weekend has some other summer events in Toronto, about which I’m writing.

“Can You Beat the Toronto Muhtadi International Drumming Festival 2012?” is a two-day drumming event, to be held at Woodbine Park. It should be a fascinating and cross-cultural music experience, with the focus on the drum.

Visit DesiFEST 2012 for a Free 12 Hour Concert

The DesiFEST 2012 concert of South Asian music is an upcoming Toronto event that almost slipped past my radar! I assume it’s free, since no admission costs are listed.

The 2013 DesiFEST in Toronto

Return to Yonge Dundas Square on May 24 and 25, 2013 for “Bollywood in the Square” from 6-10pm and “DesiFEST” from noon to 11pm, respectively.

The 2013 DesiFEST organizers have planned events from May 20 through 26, although their official web site for 2013 lacks details as of May 7.

On Sunday May 26, 2013, the free Asian Sound Slam opens its doors at 3:30pm for musicians to learn from industry insiders; but a live music performance begins at 7pm. You must register through their web site.

DesiFEST 2012 to be held Saturday May 26

Head to Yonge-Dundas Square on May 26, 2012 for the fifth DesiFEST in Toronto. The concert, a celebration of South Asian arts in Toronto, runs from 10am through 10pm on Saturday.

DesiFEST supports South Asian arts and culture in Canada, although my guess is that the concert will include a solid mix of modern music styles performed by members of the South Asian community. Judging from their site, the entertainment will be a street concert rather than a showcase for classical raga.

DesiFEST coyly links to a FaceBook page for their entertainment lineup, so it’s hard to tell exactly who will perform. It seems ISC Nation, Roach Killa and Shohba are the most recently announced entertainers.

A Bollywood Movie at Yonge-Dundas Square on Friday May 25

“Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” will be shown at Yonge and Dundas on Friday night.

DesiFEST lists the start time for this Bollywood movie as 6:30 pm. I’m not sure how Omni TV plans to darken Yonge-Dundas Square some three hours before darkness falls, but hopefully there will be a good show anyway.

DesiFEST Brings South Asia to Other Canadian Cities

If you can’t be here for a South Asian event in Toronto this weekend, don’t despair. DesiFEST also stages events in Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver; feel free to find the details online.

(Update): Another upcoming festive South Asian event puts the focus on India. Panorama India hosts an annual parade in mid August in downtown Toronto plus a celebration, also at Yonge-Dundas Square.
