8 Fun or Charity Fitness Events in Toronto on June 9, 2013

Normally this blog only mentions one or two Toronto events in one article, but the weekend of June 8-9, 2013 is just too busy for such delicate treatment.

1: Knitting and Inuit Art

This may be the most unusual pairing on the menu.

The “Knit in Public” event is hosted by the Museum of Inuit Art on June 8 and 9, 2013, from 10am to 6pm.

Earn your free admission to this museum by bringing your knitting gear.

If you’re new to knitting, the staff or volunteers will help you get started.

While there, you should also browse their collection of Inuit artwork: June is National Aboriginal History Month, after all.

The museum is inside the Terminal Building at 207 Queen’s Quay West, due south along York Street. You should follow the links from their “Location and Parking” for the scoop on visiting the Museum of Inuit Art during the construction on Queen’s Quay.

2: The Raw or Vegan Food Festival in Toronto

On June 8 from 10am to 8pm, and June 9 from 10am to 4pm, the Toronto Raw or Vegan Festival presents healthy lifestyle choices. Free admission. Beyond the food, they also promote ethical clothing and cruelty-free personal healthcare products.

Find this Toronto food festival at 918 Bathurst Street, north of Bloor. Admission is free.

3: The Toronto Annex Festival on Bloor

Only on June 9, between 11am and 6pm, the Annex Festival crams buskers, 80 artisans, live music, live theatrical performances and more onto Bloor Street between Bathurst and Spadina.

Their children’s village is open the whole time. Bands battle from 12:30 but only for about half an hour; then mainstage, fringe and busker performances dominate.

It’s free to walk through the festival, watch and listen. If you’d like to buy something from local businesses, they’d appreciate your patronage.

4: The Zareinu Moveathon Festival in Downsview Park

Also only on June 9, the Zareinu Moveathon Festival runs or walks or rides from 11am to 6pm in Downsview Park.’

This fundraising events supports the Zareinu Educational Centre which treats children with physical or developmental challenges.

Run a 5Km or 10Km race, bike 20Km in the park or walk 2Km, in return for raising $250 in pledges.

The midway offers a lot of fun, although the ticket price is $125, of which $100 is receipted as a charitable donation.

I believe it’s free to enter Downsview Park, watch the festivities and decide which foods to buy.

5: The Toronto Challenge 5Km Run

My favourite charity road race is the Toronto Challenge Run. It’s also on June 9. You can register online now; I’m heading to my local Running Room store tomorrow to sign up. You could register early on race day; I did that last year, but they only give away their high-quality T-shirts to people who pre-register.

Last year I wrote about the new route for the Toronto Challenge. Many of the details remain the same.

6: The Canada-Wide “Walk to Cure Type-1 Diabetes”

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation “Walk to Cure Type-1 Diabetes” uses the CNE bandshell as the starting point for the Toronto charity walk. Register at 8am; begin walking at 10am. Their target is to raise at least $100 per participant.

JDRF holds similar fund-raising walks in other cities across Canada, so check their official site if you want something closer to home.

7: A Toronto Walk to Fight Arthritis

The Arthritis Society invites us to Walk to Fight Arthritis on June 9, at the Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto or in many other cities in Canada. You have a choice of 1Km or 5Km. Register at 9am and begin walking at 10:30am.

You could even do a “virtual walk” when you choose your location.

8: The “Share Your Cause” Beach Volleyball Tournament

Here’s a novel idea (although I think the Toronto Waterfront Marathon has a similar approach). Register as many participants as possible for a beach volleyball tournament at Ashbridges bay; then the organizers will donate part of the registration fee to your choice of charity.

This specific event is on June 9, 2013. However, you can watch beach volleyball at Ashbridges Bay, at the foot of

Contact the Share Your Cause Beach Volleyball Tournament organizers to learn the details.

Looking for More Annual Events or a Holiday in Toronto?

As a bonus, “2013 Muhtadi Drumming Festival at Woodbine Park in Toronto” also runs the same weekend, as does Woofstock Toronto.

You can find more annual events for your vacation in Toronto; or for local residents wanting things to do in Toronto on almost any weekend in the year.

Ideas for a Toronto Vacation or Staycation

Check the “annual events” or “Toronto events” categories toward the end of the left-hand menu. I especially like to cover summer attractions and special events in Toronto; but especially for Canadian holidays.

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including Metro Toronto Zoo coupons. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the Metro Toronto Zoo discount tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple things to do in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do in Toronto, and at a bargain price thanks to the discount coupons.

  1. Dear Michael: Thanks so much for mentioning Toronto CityPASS. We love to see that. I wanted to let you know that we changed the spelling of our name a few years back. We’re now Toronto CityPASS (“CityPASS” all one word; all caps on “PASS”). Thanks again for the nice shout-out. We really appreciate it.
