2013 Redpath Waterfront Festival in Toronto

The 2013 Redpath Waterfront Festival in Toronto brings tall ships to the Toronto harbour. Although it’s not the first time tall sailing ships have moored along the Toronto waterfront, this is a great opportunity to learn how the War of 1812 affected many of the people who worked here.

During the 2013 Redpath Waterfront Festival, you can stay on shore to watch the tall sailing ships, and also interact with costumed re-enactment interpreters portraying tradespeople and soldiers.

Many of these on-shore activities are absolutely free of charge.

For a fee, however, you can board a tall ship for a moored tour, or even set sail on one of these mighty sailing vessels.

Live Your History from the War of 1812

Parks Canada brings the 100-year-old events of the War of 1812 to life with their “1812 on Tour” performance.

Again, the visitor can participate in the lives of the ordinary people, as well as some of the extraordinary heroes, who lived through those eventful days.

Where is the 2013 Redpath Waterfront Festival?

The 2013 Redpath Waterfront Festival is on Queen’s Quay between Lower Sherbourne Street and Lower Spadina Avenue.

That’s a lot of distance, about 2.3 Km as measured by the G-Map Pedometer site; but you will spend more time watching and chatting than walking. To put it another way, it’s less than half of a 5 Km charity run like the Toronto Challenge. Better yet, there’s a water shuttle!

As always, I’d recommend taking the TTC or cycling along the Martin Goodman Trail. Remember that Queen’s Quay West is under construction at the moment, which affects both TTC and driving.

The Redpath Waterfront Festival’s Visitor Services are located at Sherbourne Common South. This is the place for tickets, lost and found, etc.

The three locations for wristbands and tickets are, from west to east: HTO Park, east of Spadina; Harbour Square Park East at the foot of Bay Street; and the Sherbourne Common at the foot of Lower Sherbourne.

Where are the Tall Ships?

The tall ships are moored at the various quays on the Toronto waterfront. If you’re just browsing, I’d recommend starting at HTO Park at Lower Spadina, and walking east. By the time you get to Sherbourne Common South, you’ll know which ship you want to board.

On the other hand, if you book your cruise or tour early, you’ll get the details for your particular tall ship then.

The Early Bird gets the Bargain for the 2013 Redpath Waterfront Festival

Buy your tickets online before June 19 for your 30% discount compared to event-day tickets.

When is 2013 Redpath Waterfront Festival?

The 2013 Redpath Waterfront Festival opens on Thursday June 20 at 10am. The opening ceremonies take place from 6:30-8pm at HTO Park.

Programs continue daily from 10am to 10:30 or 11pm until Sunday June 23. The final parade of sail, from 4-6pm on Sunday, should be an absolutely spectacular view of the tall ships from any of the wharfs along Toronto’s harbourfront.

A Free Program, Only for Students

The Redpath Waterfront Festival offers a free program for students, called “The Student Program on the Wharf at York“. Teachers should book and reserve spaces before the program fills up.

The Official Redpath Waterfront Festival Site

The official site has a home page, of course; the Wharf at York explains the interactive on-shore program; in fact, it’s a full site with events and schedules and links to buy tickets online (at that 30% discount until June 19).

My special thanks to Linda Shin, Production Coordinator for Krista Slack + Aylett Inc., (heavily involved in the Wharf at York), who answered several questions. (Any errors here are my very own).

Looking for More Annual Events or a Holiday in Toronto?

You can find more annual events for your vacation in Toronto; or for local residents wanting things to do in Toronto on almost any weekend in the year.

Ideas for a Toronto Vacation or Staycation

Check the “annual events” or “Toronto events” categories toward the end of the left-hand menu. I especially like to cover summer attractions and special events in Toronto; but especially for Canadian holidays.

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including Metro Toronto Zoo coupons. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the Metro Toronto Zoo discount tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple attractions in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do in Toronto, and at a bargain price thanks to the discount coupons.
