Why You Should Resolve to Sleep More

My latest DeHaan Fitness article, “Resolve to Lose Weight with More Sleep in the New Year“, applies a pair of recent studies to recommend the simplest possible New Year resolutions that can promote healthy weight loss.

Sleep More for Less Weight

Two recent research studies found links between sleep patterns and weight control. One link is sleep deprivation and excessive appetite that cannot be satisfied properly. Another is that disruptions in sleep patterns may cause unwanted weight gain.

This image of “Sleeping Beauty by Elie Saab” might exaggerate the value of a beauty sleep. She didn’t get nearly enough exercise to maintain her athletic fitness; but she wasn’t over-eating, either.

By the way, I also researched “Elie Saab”. Apparently Amazon carries some upscale Elie Saab women’s fragrances for sale to Canadians and Americans; just search for “Elie Saab in perfume”. The British can just shop at Harrods where they search directly for “Elie Saab perfume”.

Possible Contraindications The following individuals should not take kamagra jelly with alcohol, smoking and fatty meals to make this drug highly effective. sildenafil online no prescription This is a very effective drug for treating male impotence. viagra samples australia discount viagra pharmacy When administered, it leads to increased muscle repair, but not only that – also new muscle growth. pill viagra When you send your letters you have to send them on. (Updated 2013-03-20): You can find other weight loss tips and fitness suggestions in my DeHaan Fitness and Weight Control site. In my view, the only successful fast weight loss programs must combine diet and exercise with your commitment to maintaining healthy habits even after the program is complete.

Try Skating at Harbourfront for 2012 Kwanzaa in Toronto

The annual Kwanzaa festival seems to be even more of a tradition for family and friends than a public event. At least, I did not find an official venue to celebrate the 2012 Kwanzaa in Toronto by searching online. So consider heading for Harbourfront for free activities, and make it part of your own Kwanzaa tradition.

Introducing Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a very recently minted festival, celebrating African cultural contributions to the world.

Dr. Maulana Ron Karenga developed the Kwanzaa celebration in 1966.

Kwanzaa takes place annually from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1st. The items shown in the picture, and especially the colourful candles, symbolize different aspects of this newly fashioned tradition.

Although intended for the black community, everyone should embrace the personal and cultural values that Kwanzaa celebrates.

How does Toronto Harbourfront Celebrate Kwanzaa 2012?

This year, Toronto Harbourfront Centre does not have a specific 2012 Kwanzaa event. In fact, Kwanzaa does not seem to be an official winter event in Toronto this year.

However, Harbourfront’s “Beat Nation: Art, Hip Hop and Aboriginal Culture” blends Canadian aboriginal culture with the urban youth vibe of hip hop music as a means to empower both groups. This free Harbourfront Power Plant presentation runs from Dec. 15, 2012 through May 5, 2013.

So go during Kwanzaa: “Beat Nation” is available Dec. 27-30; they are closed Dec. 24, 25, 26, 31 and Jan. 1, 2013. Best of all, it’s free to see this art in its variety of media including scupture, performance, paintings and installations. It’s open 10am through 5pm.

Then head to the Harbourfront Natrel Rink, which is open daily from 10am through at least 10pm.

I’m not sure the rink is open when “Beat Nation” is closed, so that’s why I suggest you do both in one trip.

(Added Dec. 23, 2012): In fact, you can indeed skate to the music, free, on the Natrel rink at Harbourfront on Sat. Dec. 29 from 8-11pm. The event is “Bollywood Blitz with DJ Baba Kahn“.

Harbourfront is at 231 Queens Quay West. Add to your fitness routine for the day by walking nearly due south along York Street from the St. Andrew subway station at King and University.

Other City of Toronto Outdoors Skating Rinks

The City Rinks (Toronto) site offers an excellent “Map of Rinks“, listing 53 outdoor skating rinks. The four corners include Royalcrest Rink at 50 Cabernet Circle in Etobicoke; Scarborough Civic Centre at 150 Borough Drive; Kew Gardens near the lake where Lee Avenue meets Queen Street East; and Sir Adam Beck Rink at 520 Horner Avenue in the south-west.

So no matter how distant the Harbourfront Natrel rink may be, or whether you celebrate festivities other than Kwanzaa during the winter solstice, free outdoor skating in Toronto is an excellent winter-long fitness choice.

The Upcoming Charitable Toronto Zombie Walk 2012

The tenth annual Zombie Walk in Toronto lurches through Nathan Phillips Square this weekend. This year, Toronto zombies have decided to be charitable for their 2012 event.

Which Charity Benefits from the 2012 Zombie Walk in Toronto?

Charitable Toronto zombies support the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Please help out your zombie friends by donating to Heart and Stroke when they shamble forward with their requests.

Is the Toronto Zombie Walk a “Come as You Are” Event?

Provident zombies might leave home already prepared for the event, wearing one’s own zombie costume. They might also bring their own zombie makeup and accessories.

On the other decaying hand, vendors will be available to apply the finishing touches to your complexion. At worst, it’s likely that some free effects and make-up will be donated.

Those of us who still remain alive can certainly view the event. What’s a zombie walk without spectators, who have the potential of becoming appetizing healthy snacks for the undead? The Zombie Walk is one of many annual Toronto events, but perhaps the best for seeing “dead people walking”.

When and Where is the 2012 Toronto Zombie Walk?

Shamble to Nathan Phillips Square on Saturday Oct. 20, 2012 at high noon for the start of the festivities.

Formalities begin at 2:30 pm, with live music performances. Zombie fitness enthusiasts lurch through a 5Km course from City Hall on Queen St. West, to University Ave., Dundas St., Yonge St. and back to City Hall.

I must make two observations about this charity “fitness” event. Surprisingly this charity event remains on the sidewalks, rather than closing the streets to vehicular traffic. Second, even undead zombies recognize the importance of physical fitness to enable one to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle…or perhaps “undead-style”. Older living people also can benefit from regular exercise; I noted a couple of them in “Seniors Running for Fitness and Glory in Toronto Marathon“.

“Live” music resumes at 4 pm, but it’s unclear how long Montreal’s The Brains can continue performing after their 6 pm start. After all, they are in hostile territory with the zombies hungering for them at this autumn Toronto event.

The annual schedule offers everyone the opportunity to develop and fine-tune their zombie costumes and makeup just in time for Hallowe’en parties.

Are Toronto’s Zombies Isolated in Canada?

No: Toronto zombies are simply slower to congregate in 2012 than those of other cities. A quick Internet search revealed many gruesome details.

Zombies have already walked the streets of Winnipeg last Saturday Oct. 13, 2012, to supply non-perishable food and cash donations to Winnipeg Harvest.

Zombies lurched through Sault Ste. Marie the same day and for a similar cause.

Other reports of zombie walks came from St. John, NB; Montreal, PQ; Windsor Ont.; and Vancouver BC. Diligent and vigilant readers might find past or future zombie walks in their own communities.

Register at the Official Toronto Zombie Walk Web Site

The organizers would like you to pre-register for Zombie Walk 2012 through their official site, but it’s a free event.

The Toronto Zombie Walk site has a number of pages, links to vendors of zombie makeup and related undead merchandise, and to the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Facebook page.

I especially enjoyed their sense of humour, with puns such as “5 Kill-o-meter stroll” to describe the 5Km walk.
