Anticipating Christmas and Kwanzaa 2011

(Updated Oct. 12, 2015): These seasonal articles were published in now-defunct web sites.

An annual television commercial quotes the song, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” to sell back-to-school items for September. It was actually a Christmas song and made-for-TV-movie with Henry Winkler.

So this is a wonderful time of the year. You are invited to enjoy seven of my articles related to the Yule season.

I’ve written about Kwanzaa and Christmas as the seasonal holidays. Yes, I’m open to suggestions for Hanukkah (and open to suggestions on its most proper spelling), Diwali, and any others for this season.

Also, I’m using this chance to mention my articles on reindeer because they are associated with Christmas and they’re just remarkable in so many ways.

You will note that these articles are no longer found since their sites are defunct.

Kwanzaa from the Outside

Last year I wrote two Kwanzaa articles because I realized that an older, white North American like myself really did not have a clue about it. Yet it is becoming popular, and speaks especially to those proud of their African heritage.

The Kwanzaa Holiday: A Controversial Yet Unifying New Celebration” introduces this festival, its brief history and purpose.

A Quick Introduction to Kwanzaa Holiday Entertaining” is a more practical guide to planning a Kwanzaa celebration, particularly Kwanzaa decorations and a Kwanzaa meal.

Remind me to write a comprehensive series sometime.

Instead, I decided to focus on decorations.

Safety Tips to Select and Install Outdoor Christmas Lights” is about the outdoor decorations. Ladders can become slippery with snow or ice. Be careful about the extension cords, too!

Reindeer Ice the Cake

Actually they have nothing to do with cakes, but reindeer do have remarkable powers and a fascinating history.

Was Santa Claus the First to Domesticate Reindeer?” might be my favourite in this group, because I truly enjoy bringing three concepts together. Who really domesticated reindeer first? How did Santa Claus get entangled with reindeer? What is special about reindeer?

The Reindeer Superpower: Ultraviolet Vision” is an example of a “my goodness, they have WHAT?” moment. It is especially amazing when we consider how carefully we protect our eyes from harmful ultra-violet light by wearing UV-blocking sunglasses. Reindeer also ignore the problems we mere humans have with “snow blindness”.

Three Ways Reindeer Play it Cool” was published quite recently. Reindeer surprised researchers who wanted to know how an animal that can “chill out” and relax in cold weather could also exercise hard without over-heating.

  1. Greetings! Quick question that’s entirely off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My web site looks weird when viewing from my iphone. I’m trying to find a theme or plugin that might be able to correct this issue. If you have any recommendations, please share. With thanks!

  2. An exciting discussion is worth observe. I anticipate that you should create author on this subject, it mightiness not be a bias field but mostly group are not enough to verbalise on such topics. To the next. Cheers like your Anticipating Christmas and Kwanzaa 2011 dehaanservices.ca.

  3. Hey are using WordPress for your site platform? I’m new to the blog world but I’m trying to get started and set up my own. Do you require any html coding knowledge to make your own blog? Any help would be really appreciated!

    1. Yes, it’s WordPress. No, HTML is notrequired“, since you can just use a (free) “theme” that has all the coding. However, if you want to tweak the theme…which I did, with the overall colours and some aspects of the sidebar…then you need to know at least some HTML and CSS principles. I use “W3C Schools Online” for reference and guidance. Or get a guru to help you. And you also want to read the WordPress site for advice.
