2013 Grey Cup Opening Ceremonies; Underground Music; and Family Events on Nov. 20, 2013

On Wed., Nov. 20, downtown Regina’s Mosaic Festival Village will host the official opening ceremonies for the 2013 Grey Cup from noon to 1pm. Free admission includes “sport, culture and fiery entertainment”; quite a lot to pack into a one hour program that may well include a speech or two.

“But wait; there’s more”! Those age 19 and older should stay in the Mosaic Underground Tent beyond that noon hour, for live music and further merriment until 11pm. Bring a non-perishable food donation for the Regina Food Bank; that’s nearly free admission. You get special treatment with a “Team Party Pass”, at least until 7pm. That is, if you were clever enough to buy the pass when it was available. Have fun shopping on Kijiji. (Note: the Mosaic Tent requires the Team Party Pass from Thursday through Saturday, so Wednesday is your only chance for a freebie here).

The Nissan Family Zone also presents free activities, including a cook-off and carnival games, from 2-7pm daily from Wed. Nov. 20 through Sat. Nov. 23, 2013.

Both Mosaic events are at City Square Plaza, at 12th Avenue and Scarth Street in downtown Regina. So is the Nissan Family Zone. For those of us who don’t actually live in Regina, the “Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field” is north-west of City Square Plaza, probably a kilometre’s walk west along Victoria Ave. and north on Retaillack St. I’m not sure whether you can cross the railway tracks just north of Saskatchewan Drive, but it does not look promising. So be careful to ask your taxi driver to for City Square Plaza, not “Mosaic”.

The Telus Street Festival is another free Grey Cup 2013 event. Hunt for autographs, play games and enjoy the rest of the entertainment daily Wed. Nov. 20 through Sat. Nov. 23, 2013 from 2-7pm. Head south from the Mosaic area to the F.W. Hill Mall (Scarth St. and Victoria Avenue).

The Wednesday Riderville 2013 event is at Evraz Place, 1700 Elphinstone Street, Regina, SK, from 4pm on Wed. Nov. 20 to 1am the next morning. Admission is nearly free (non-perishable food donation) for those 19 and over, implying that children aren’t welcome here for the live music. (Note: Riderville requires the Team Party Pass from Thursday through Saturday, so Wednesday is your only chance for a freebie here).

A Free Grey Cup Breakfast from Calgary and Edmonton’s Team Spirit

Start Thursday Nov. 21, 2013 and Friday the 22nd with a free Grey Cup Calgary Breakfast in Regina. The Calgary Grey Cup Committee takes pride in feeding pancakes in the Grey Cup host city. Get in line for 11am-1pm at City Square Plaza. (Hmmm. That’s either a pancake brunch or you had to sleep late after partying the night before).

From 4pm to 1am on Nov. 21, the Spirit of Edmonton offers free entertainment, including Spoiled Rotten, “at the Orr Centre at Lewvan and 4th”. Come back for more on Fri. & Sat., Nov. 22 & 23, from 2pm to 1am.

The Fan State of the League

The Fan State of the League says the least about its agenda for Friday Nov. 22, 2013, but it’s free at the Delta Hotel (1919 Saskatchewan Drive), from 11am to 1am.

Two Free 2013 Grey Cup Events on Game Day

Hang out in Victoria Park on Sunday Nov. 24, 2013 from 1:30-5pm to qualify to carry the one true Grey Cup. Victoria Park is bounded by Lorne St., Victoria Ave., Scarth St. and 12th Ave. In other words, it’s the park just south of the Mosaic Festival Village in City Square Plaza. This event is called “CFL Sun Life Fan March”. My suspicion is that, even if you aren’t selected for the Grey Cup entourage, you could still walk along the sidewalk in its wake. No charge to participate, but you need luck to be selected.

Or Party on the Practice Field in Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field from 2:30-5pm on Sunday. This will replicate the Mosaic Festival Village, but on the practice field. Again, this family-friendly event is free to attend.

Remember that the 2013 Grey Cup Game actually starts at 5pm at Taylor Field.

Check Amazon.ca’s CFL Shop. I took the liberty to sort the list by popularity; it seems that the Saskatchewan Roughriders have a loyal fan base who like Christmas and golfing.
