Five Free Toronto Events for July 6-7, 2013

(Updated June 28, 2014): We’re looking forward to the July 5-6, 2014 weekend this year, even if several of these annual Toronto summer events have moved on the calendar. I’ve updated the Afrofest, Festival of South Asia, Persian Family Day and Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition sections below. Unfortunately, I’ve found nothing about Corso Italia 2014.

Other tasks keep me from paying enough attention to these five Toronto events this weekend, July 6-7 of 2013. So be sure to pay your respects to these annual summer events in Toronto.

(The Festival of South Asia will be on Gerrard Street, where I’d taken this image for a TorontoHenge article just before sunset in 2011).

The five free summer weekend events, in alphabetical order, are:

  • Afrofest 2013 at Woodbine Park;
  • Corso Italia 2013 on St. Clair Ave. West, which starts on July 5 (and should not be confused with “Little Italy Toronto”;
  • Festival of South Asia, on Gerrard Street west of Coxwell;
  • Persian Family Day at Mel Lastman Square, which runs on July 6 only;
  • Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition in Nathan Phillips Square starts on July 5;
  • (Added July 5th): The “2013 Taste of Lawrence” also starts on July 5, as a bonus sixth free festival in Toronto this weekend.

Let’s get straight to the details of these early summer Toronto annual events.

The 2013 Afrofest at Woodbine Park near Toronto’s Eastern Beaches

(Updated June 11 & 28, 2014): I now recommend both the specific Afrofest 2014 page and the official Afrofest main page. Afrofest returns to Woodbine Park for July 5-6, 2014 with the children’s village, local and African musicians, food and merchandise.

For 2013, Afrofest returns to Woodbine Park for the July 6-7 weekend from 1pm-10pm both Saturday and Sunday. It’s free to attend.

A variety of African artists perform on the main stage. Shop for crafts and food in the African marketplace. Participate in music workshops on the Baobab Stage. The children’s village will help raise your kids with an appreciation for African music and culture.

Woodbine Park is bounded by Lake Shore Blvd East, Coxwell and Eastern Avenues. Take the Coxwell or Woodbine bus south from the Danforth, or the Queen streetcar east to those intersections. I’d covered Afrofest last year, with more details about this festival’s history, in “Toronto Afrofest 2012 at Woodbine Park“.

Corso Italia in Toronto

(Updated June 28, 2014): I’ve found no information about Corso Italia for 2014, and the old link has died. Can anyone let me know?

Corso Italia warms up on Friday July 5 by starting its sidewalk sale, but on the July 6-7 weekend, St. Clair Ave. West will be closed from Dufferin to Landsdowne with free live music at two main stages and the food festival surrounding it. Yes, I’d take the TTC north from the Bloor subway.

Note that Little Italy Toronto is centred on College Street between Ossington and Bathurst; Corso Italia is north of that, on St. Clair Ave. West.

The official Corso Italia Festival site offers a bit more information.

The 2013 Festival of South Asia in Toronto’s Little India

(Updated June 28, 2014): The venue has not changed, but the TD Festival of South Asia will wait until Aug. 23-24, 2014. It will still feature live performances, cultural programmes, and South Asian cuisine. My wife and I attend each year, noting that it’s easy to stroll the full stretch of Gerrard St. occupied by this annual Toronto summer event.

The Toronto Festival of South Asia 2013 stays on Gerrard Street, centred on the Gerrard India Bazaar. I think of this annual summer event like a “Taste of Little India” street festival.

On July 6-7, from noon to 11pm, the main stage will host free music and dance entertainment, including “Asia’s Got Talent” in one time slot.

This closes Gerrard Street west from Coxwell to about Greenwood Avenue. Obviously, take the TTC from the Danforth subway. I supplied more background last year in “Festival of South Asian Culture in Toronto in 2012“.

Check the official Festival of South Asia site to learn more.

Here’s one image from the Toronto South Asia Festival 2013 that I took early Saturday evening.

The 2013 Persian Family Day Celebration in Toronto

(Updated June 28, 2014): Persian Family Day 2014 will be held Sat. July 26 from noon to 10pm.

Head to Mel Lastman Square for Toronto’s Persian Family Day on Saturday July 6, 2013 (only) from noon to 10pm. The music and culture is free; the live performances grace the main stage from 6-9:30pm.

The street address for Mel Lastman Square is 5100 Yonge Street: take the #1 (Yonge) subway to the North York Centre station.

The official Persian Family Day site offers more details, especially about the mysterious gap in my report from noon to 6pm.

The 2013 Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition

(Updated June 28, 2014): The Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition 2014 will run July 4-6 from 10:30-7:30 the first two days but only until 6:30pm on Sunday. This year’s featured artist is Mark Rosser, best known for his interpretations of northern Ontario and the Bruce Trail. Another 350 artists will exhibit works at this year’s event at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto.

The free 2013 Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, “the largest juried outdoor art exhibition in Canada”, runs July 5 [from 10:30am – 7:30pm], July 6 [10:30am – 7:30pm] and July 7 [10:30am – 6:30pm]. I’m not sure how many free outdoor art exhibitions Toronto hosts each year; but this is a great one to visit.

Nathan Phillips Square at City Hall on Queen Street hosts this outdoor art exhibit. It’s between the Queen and Osgoode subway stations on the Yonge-University subway.

Of course the official Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition 2013 site provides lots more background about the artists.

The 2013 Taste of Lawrence

(Added July 5, 2013): I just found the 2013 Taste of Lawrence when checking the TTC schedule for tomorrow. It’s free, with music and the opportunity for your children to help make “Canada’s longest charm bracelet”. Of course a “Taste of…” has food; but also rides, an Asian culture expo and a children’s zone.

Their public service contribution is to accept your donation of old cell phones; this benefits victims of crimes or accidents.

Taste of Lawrence 2013 runs July 5 from 6-11pm; 6 from 11am-11pm; and 7 from 11am-6pm; on Lawrence Ave. East between Warden Ave. and Birchmount Ave. Don’t expect to drive there.

Here’s the official 2013 Taste of Lawrence site for your perusal.

Freely Attend, but Feel Free to Spend

In case it’s not obvious, most of these street festivals and cultural events do hope that you spend on food or memorabilia. Still, I love soaking up culture and music for free at these annual Toronto summer events.

Ideas for a Toronto Vacation or Staycation

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including Metro Toronto Zoo coupons. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the Metro Toronto Zoo discount tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple things to do in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do in Toronto, and at a bargain price thanks to the discount coupons.
