The 2013 Salsa on St. Clair Street Festival in Toronto

There will be salsa dancing in the street at the 2013 Salsa on St. Clair Street Festival in Toronto.

(Yes, the picture of indoor salsa dancing is from Bangkok, Thailand. My point is that anyone, of any ethnic background, could learn how to dance the salsa).

St. Clair Avenue West hosts the ninth annual Salsa Street Festival in Toronto. This annual summer Toronto event features professional salsa dancers, Latin music, and the opportunity to dance the salsa on Toronto’s streets.

Regular readers know that I love a free event. I’m ashamed that I hadn’t known about “Salsa on St. Clair”, because I used to live right in this neighbourhood…over 3 decades ago, at St. Clair Ave. W and Vaughan Road.

Where is the Salsa on St. Clair Street Festival?

This Salsa Dance Festival has six “hot spots” along St. Clair Ave. West from Christie Street (well west of Bathurst), west to Winona Drive (well east of Oakwood).

The main stage is near the midpoint, around Greensides Avenue.

Of course I’d recommend taking the TTC. Ride the University side of the Yonge-University subway line to the St. Clair Ave. West station at Bathurst. Walk less than a kilometre west and you’ll be hip-to-hip with salsa dancers.

When is the Salsa on St. Clair Street Festival?

Salsa Dancing begins Saturday July 13, 2013 at noon; the salsa performances end by 11pm each night; and the final day is Sunday July 14, 2013.

More Details for the 2013 Salsa on St. Clair Street Festival

Some performers, such as Lady Son and Afro-Lusophone, have several engagements during this two-day salsa festival. I’m not going to reproduce their event schedule here. Let me note thaat the Steps Dance Studio performs, but they also teach salsa dancing in Toronto. Catch them in several performances at “Hot Spot D” (Rushton Road) both afternoons; afterwards, ask them about salsa dance classes in Toronto.

May I point out that the Salsa Festival has scheduled a parade each evening, from 9-10:45, from Winona to Christie.

Judging from the photos from previous years, this street festival encourages participation in festive clothing. You should dress for dancing the salsa, si?

The official 2013 Salsa on St. Clair Street Festival site includes the lineup of performers (the “Event Schedule” as well as performer biographies), a map, and the all important “how to get there” page with suggestions whether you want to ride the TTC or drive and park your car. NOTE: the menu to get to those extra pages is in the right-hand column, with the yellow background, but under the red “Salsa on St. Clair” section. The top part of the menu is for their “Salsa at Blue Mountain” event, which has an appropriate blue colour.

Ideas for a Toronto Vacation or Staycation

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including Metro Toronto Zoo coupons. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the Metro Toronto Zoo discount tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple things to do in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do while vacationing in Toronto, and at a bargain price thanks to the discount coupons.
