What is Daylight Savings Time?

The phrase, “Daylight Savings Time”, means that we “save” an hour of daylight in the warmer part of the year by adjusting our clocks. This allows more time outdoors. It’s been argued that this saves energy for lighting; some say it’s hogwash. Regardless, for practical purposes, Daylight Saving Time or DST is simply this one-hour adjustment from Standard Time.

By the way, the idea for “Standard Time” is that the sun should be at its daily zenith, or highest point in the sky, exactly at noon. This would mean every line of longitude would have it’s own noon. Standard Time created twenty-four time zones, so everyone in a much larger area could set the clock to the same time.

Remember to Reset Your Travel Alarm Clock

We all need a travel alarm clock. It’s a no-brainer for business travel, but even on vacation we need to get out of the motel by check-out time.

I noticed that this digital LCD model has some great user reviews from buyers in the USA. It uses one not-included AAA battery, and has a short snooze timer so you won’t be late starting your travel day. The advantage of the AAA battery is you don’t need to re-set this alarm clock after each leg of your journey. But you do need to reset any alarm clock for Daylight Saving Time.

It’s available in Canada and in the USA. I’m puzzled why the Canadian version is called “Timex” when the American title agrees with the photograph that says “Elgin”.
