Three completely different events are in Toronto for September 2012 featuring wind, water and words (although the water lingers longer…into March).

On Saturday, Sept. 22, Woodbine Beach will be the venue for the no-entry-fee third annual WindFest from noon through the evening.

WindFest celebrates the wind with kites. The Windjammers International Kite Team will demonstrate feats of aerial skill.

Children will be given instructions and free materials for making kites; they will even help out adults.

While vendors will be willing to sell you a kite, you’re welcome to arrive with your own. “Go fly a kite“, or just watch.

The sponsors include companies promoting sustainable green energy production through wind power. The official WindFest web site has more details.

The best way to get to Woodbine Beach, at the foot of Coxwell at Lake Shore Blvd East, is to bike along the Martin Goodman Trail.

The TTC alternatives are the 92 Woodbine South bus to the park, or a walk from Queen and Coxwell.

Yes, there is a parking lot if you must drive.

Commemorating Toronto’s Czar of Water

Roland Caldwell Harris is best known for the “RC Harris Water Treatment Plant” on Queen Street East. He served Toronto’s public works department for three decades.

From Sept. 15 2012 through March 2 2013, the Market Gallery is holding a special exhibition commemorating RC Harris and his multiple achievements. Head to the Market Gallery any Tuesday through Saturday to gain new appreciation for the clean water that arrives in your taps; the sewage treatment plant at the other end of the path; and the foresight that put a subway track under the Prince Edward Viaduct decades before a train rumbled through.

To Find Toronto’s Market Gallery

The Market Gallery is at 95 Front Street East, where Jarvis and Lower Jarvis meet.

The official City of Toronto Market Gallery web page gives directions to the St. Lawrence Market district location, admission hours, and has a link to the PDF advertising this specific exhibit commemorating the achievements of R.C. Harris on behalf of Toronto.

The 2012 Toronto Word on the Street Event

The 2012 Toronto Word on the Street event runs on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012 from 11am to 6pm at Queen’s Park (actually “on the street”, which is Queen’s Park Crescent according to Google Maps; but I think of it as Queen’s Park Circle).

Besides offering books and magazines from publishing houses both grand and small, Word on the Street also offers a “World Food Market”, special niches for children’s books, and a variety of other presentations.

Let me focus on just one item that has my vote for “most eye-catching title”. “This is Not the Shakespeare Stage” hosts “hourly, genre-based, interactive programming sessions”. This is a great name with a fascinating program.

  • 4 authors will explain their collaboration on writing a series of intertwined novels, from noon to 1pm.
  • Megan Crewe will explain why she wrote a story that could scare herself from 1-1:30.
  • 4 other authors share the next hour on their stories; I’m most interested in how Lesley Livingston researched her heroine’s fencing skills.
  • 7 new teen-aged authors have the stage from 2:30-3:30.
  • “Writing the lyrics for songs” is the topic from 3:30-4:15.
  • Shane Peacock discusses his “Boy Sherlock” character from 4:15-4:45.
  • Three authors mete out death, or at least a discussion on mortality, from 4:45-5:30.

Of course, Toronto Word on the Street 2012 will bring much more to Queen’s Park in 2012.

To Find Toronto’s Word on the Street

Queen’s Park Crescent is the name of the very divided street that University Avenue becomes as it crosses north of College Street. Take the Bloor-Danforth subway to Queen’s Park, then walk north past the provincial legislature.

The official Toronto Word on the Street 2012 web site is chock-full of more information.
