Who Cares about the Northern Snakehead Fish?

Does anyone really care about this? Yes, they do!
Several US states ask their citizens to kill any Northern Snakehead fish they happen to catch. It’s an invasive species, brought to North America from Asia partly because it is considered a tasty and nutritious food.
My article explains where this Northern Snakehead was sighted, and some of the concerns.
I had already mentioned this invasive fish in Suite 101. “Will Closing a Canal Avert an Ecological Natural Disaster?” is about Chicago’s stance towards both the Northern Snakehead fish and the Asian Bighead Carp. The article was written in August 2011. I had expected that one or both piscine predators would attack the Great Lakes rather than a pond in British Columbia.
Updates about the Search for Northern Snakehead in Burnaby BC
This section will be in reverse chronological order, listing the most recent news.
- On June 8, 2012, the CBC reported that “B.C.’s snakehead caught after Burnaby pond drained“. Provincial officials began draining the lagoon and finally caught one in their nets. They plan to finish both draining the water and eliminating all non-native aquatic species, then refill and restock the pond. Their report does not mention whether the hunt will continue in the region.
- By the end of May 2012, no Northern Snakeheads have been found, per a Canadian Press report in the Winnipeg Free Press on May 24. Apparently, the Environment Ministry “staff will develop a plan for followup surveys”.
