When is Robbie Burns Day?

We honour the national poet of Scotland, Robbie Burns, on the anniversary of his birthday: January 25, 1759. The traditional Burns Supper includes piping in, reciting Burn’s Ode To, and eating a haggis.

(Added Feb. 5, 2015): Learn to prepare and cook your own haggis at Mackenzie House Museum in Toronto on Sat. March 14 from 10am-1pm. Maggie Newell will share her expertise in the culinary arts of the period. Be ready for next year’s Robbie Burns Day! Here’s the link to the Mackenzie House events page; but the event probably won’t be listed after the date has passed. (And now back to Robbie Burns Day 2015).

Yes, a Burns Supper is one of many annual Toronto events;

Where does Toronto Celebrate Robbie Burns Day in 2015?

The St. Andrews Society of Toronto celebrates the 2015 Robbie Burns Day meets at Allen Gardens at 11am on Sun. Jan. 25. Gather by the Burns statue on the east side of the park, nearer Sherbourne St. The Society offers piping, haggis and other delectable fare (at a pub, so be prepared to pay your way after the free outdoor ceremonies).

Allen Gardens is in downtown Toronto at 19 Horticultural Ave. The park is bounded by Carlton, Sherbourne, Gerrard and Jarvis. (Horticultural Ave. comes north from Gerrard St.).

Among the Toronto museums, Mackenzie House concentrates on Robbie Burns for Sunday afternoon from noon to 4pm on Jan. 25. They offer shortbread and “a taste of haggis”, with music, for the standard under-$10 admission fee. Mackenzie House is at 82 Bond St. (That’s a few short blocks east of Yonge, south of Dundas Square, but west of Church and well north of Shuter).

Since I advocate free and frugal events, let’s only mention that Casa Loma will charge a lot of money for a 4-course Burns Supper on Sat. Jan. 24. Johnny Walker sponsors this whiskey tasting meal, but the Liberty Group still charges a hefty price tag. Maybe that’s just to make sure that only true fans will attend; hmm, there’s a challenge for you.

Avoiding Robbie Burns in Toronto

You could take a nature walk at Todmorden Mills on Robbie Burns Day. Their “Winter in the Valley” event runs for an hour from 1:30pm on Sun. Jan. 25. For under $10, you can learn how the Don Valley’s wildlife survives the winter; and sample hot cider.

Todmorden Mills, another Toronto museum, is at 67 Pottery Road, just east of the Don River and on the south side of the road. You can’t miss seeing the chimney! Pottery Road links Broadview (at Mortimer) and Bayview (south of Moore Park).

Fitness with the Tortoise and the Hare

Does Aesop’s fable, The Tortoise and the Hare, actually teach us about fitness and how to pace your run? Maybe not, but it helped me put an insight into perspective in “The Tortoise and Hare Approach to Running Pace“, my latest DeHaan Fitness post.

Okay, Aesop Really Didn’t Say Much about Fitness

I’d like to feel as quick as this rabbit, but as I admit in that blog post, I felt really slow at the start of that fitness session.

And no, Aesop truly did not discuss “pace” for exercising. He had a different insight about competition. Actually my blog post is about setting a wise pace early in the run. I used the “Tortoise and Hare” phrase to highlight the contrast between trying too hard versus starting with a sustainable pace.

Aesop’s Fables (Kindle Edition)” has a low price, and a 4-star rating from 7 reviewers. Each modernized fable has its own illustration. Check it out in the Canadian edition or the American edition.

The “Aesop’s Fables (Oxford World’s Classics – Kindle Edition)” version has a whopping 600 fables! The only review gives it 5 stars. This version has been translated anew from the Greek. It’s recommended for the parent who wants to know what the original stories really said. Check it out in the Canadian edition or the American edition.

Selected 2015 New Year Levees in Toronto

The French instituted the Levée (“risen”) as a ritual for the favoured to help the king get up in the morning. In the New World, many politicians and vice-regal dignitaries hold a New Year Levée to greet the public. Where in Toronto can you shake hands with our nouveau nobility early in 2015, as this annual winter Toronto event continues?

Remember: it’s free to attend, and check the links to the official pages for details about additional entertainment. As a rule, an indoor reception is pretty quiet; outdoor skating tends to include family-friendly music.

The 2015 Queen’s Park Levée with Lieutentant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell

Join our new Lieutentant Governor of Ontario, Elizabeth Dowdeswell, in the vice-regal suite at Queen’s Park on Thurs. Jan. 1, 2015 from noon-2pm. I’d take the TTC to Queen’s Park. The 506 Carlton streetcar stop is at University and College; it’s a quick walk north to the legislature.

Then take a brisk walk south to Toronto City Hall.

Toronto Mayor John Tory to Hold an Icy Levée at Nathan Phillips Square

Toronto Mayor John Tory’s 2015 Levée will be held on Jan. 1 from 2-3:30pm on New Year’s Day at Nathan Phillips Square. This brings to partial fruition an idea floated by former mayor Rob Ford, to skate on the outdoor rink. Apparently Mayor Tory will also shake hands indoors at City Hall, as well as skating in the square.

Mayor Tory will return to City Hall from his midnight countdown at the New Year’s Eve party.

Toronto City Hall is at Bay and Queen; I’d take the TTC downtown for this event if I weren’t already at Queen’s Park.

I suspect some other downtown Toronto Councillors plan to join this skating levée.

Deferred 2015 New Year Levées with Other Toronto Councillors

Head to the East York Civic Centre on Sunday Jan. 4 from 1-3pm for the East York New Year’s Levée, with some councillors as well as young musicians sponsored by the Beaches International Jazz Festival. Thank goodness Councillor Mary Fragedakis posted this; I’d also read somewhere that Janet Davis will attend as well.

On Saturday Jan. 10, Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon and MPP Arthur Potts will hold a joint Levée at the Naval Club (1910 Upper Gerrard at Woodbine) from 2-4pm.

That’s the same date and time as Councillor Paul Ainslie’s New Year Levée, but I didn’t find the location in the left-hand menu on his page.

A year or so ago, Scarborough councillors cut out this annual Toronto tradition; I have not found notices for the others by my self-imposed deadline. If any readers can send me a link to more news for their area, I would publish gratefully.

Mississauga Mayor to Host Levée on New Year’s Day

Newly elected Mayor Bonnie Crombie will host her 2015 New Year Levée at City Hall and Celebration Square in Mississauga. The indoor ceremony begins at 2pm; but outdoor skating will be available too.
