Why the Lutherans and Mennonites Reconciled

The Origins of the 2010 Lutheran and Mennonite Reconciliation” had been published in a now-defunct online magazine.

Reconciled but not Reunited: the Mennonite Church and the Lutheran Church

Although many people might not realize that they had any problems…or, perhaps, that these Christian denominations exist…they actually had quite a spat back in the 1500s, and needed some time to work it out.

Martin Luther and Menno Simons had a lot in common; but were passionately opposed on some issues. So opposed, in fact, that the Lutherans agreed with their other rivals, the Catholics, that the only good Anabaptists (Mennonites) were dead, fled the country, or recanted to rejoin their countrymen in either the Lutheran or Catholic faith.

In the modern world, religious faith is usually a matter of personal choice. Western democracies might support a specific denomination, but generally we are free to attend any, all or no places of worship.

In the 1500s, as the Reformation movement began to challenge the monopoly that the Roman Catholic faith held in Europe, religious convictions could lead to a criminal conviction and a death sentence. Lutherans eventually found their power in German states; Anabaptists such as the Mennonites had to flee to other countries to escape persecution.

Two denominations in the U.S.A. will also hold a reconciliation event.

As a further sign of mutual reconciliation and respect, Larry Miller of the Mennonite World Conference planted one of two trees in Wittenberg’s Luther Garden in October 2012. Frieder Boller, a German Mennonite leader, planted another.

The Lutheran denomination is already planning to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Luther posting his “95 Theses” onto a church door, back in 1517. That is considered the start of the Protestant Reformation.
