Taste of the Danforth, Horsecapades or 2015 ParaPan Games

Toronto faces a tough decision this weekend: whether to patronize the Taste of the Danforth, the Horsecapades at the CNE, or the 2015 ParaPan Games.

Here’s how you can catch all three!

The 2015 Taste of the Danforth in Toronto

The Taste of the Danforth is an annual summer Toronto event with massive publicity, and the most limited timeframe.

Taste of the Danforth in Toronto runs from August 7-9, 2015. Friday night goes from 6pm to midnight; Saturday from noon to midnight; and Sunday from noon to 10pm.

Personally, I think it’s great to just wander along the street, and buying finger food from the various restaurants in Greektown. (There’s sushi and Thai if memory serves; and other non-Greek foods too. But the district’s name is Greektown, and that’s the main ethnicity for food and shopping).

The official Krinos Taste of the Danforth web site has lots more details on the performances at several stages, plus where to participate in sports or kids activities.

Take the #2 Bloor/Danforth subway to any of the stations from Broadview to Chester. Don’t even think of driving; Danforth Ave. is closed from Broadview to Jones, and neighbourhood street parking is always very busy anyway. Bicycling is great exercise, but it’s tricky to walk your bike through the crowds.

Taste of the Danforth is free to attend, but budget for food and drinks. Expect to join one of the happiest crowds in Toronto this weekend.

Horsecapades in Toronto

The Horsecapades introduces children and non-equestrians to the amazing abilities of horses to perform and entertain. Head to the Horse Palace (and the Better Living Centre) on the CNE grounds, any day from August 2 – 20, 2015, “from 11am – 2pm” for your interactive enjoyment. The “Horsepower Live” shows are at 11:30am and 1pm. I’d rather go early for the morning show, and take the wagon ride later.

If you’ve asked yourself, “Where can I take the kids for free in Toronto?”, one answer is check out the interactive kids activities at Horsecapades.

(Another answer is to check the Harbourfront Centre calendar, and filter on “Family”).

Horsecapades is a free annual Toronto event, leading up to “The Ex”. Get more details from the official Horsecapades web page.

The 2015 ParaPan Games in Toronto

The 2015 ParaPan Games run from August 7 – 15, with sports ranging from archery to wheelchair tennis. The Toronto Star has published features about some of Canada’s dedicated athletes who will compete here.

With multiple venues and schedules, please check the official Toronto PanAm Games web site. The default has been set to show the ParaPan events, so that part is easy. If you had not bought tickets for the PanAm Games, you may want to read my notes in “How to Find Tickets for the TO2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto“.

The Aboriginal Pavilion for the TO2015 PanAm Games in Toronto

The TO2015 PanAm Games are the big summer event in Toronto this year, but one host has not received all the attention it deserves.

The Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation (MNCFN), part of the Ojibway (Anishinabe) Nation, also serve as a host for the PanAm and ParaPan Games in Toronto. The Aboriginal Pavilion at Fort York is their location for TO2015, and the site for their indigenous festival.

About the Aboriginal Pavilion at Fort York during TO2015

The Aboriginal Pavilion will be at Fort York during the PanAm and ParaPan festivities, July 10-26 and Aug. 7-9, 2015. Experience life in four “villages” on the Garrison Commons; peruse aboriginal crafts; enjoy the music; and where else will you find First Nations food vendors?

Did we mention the free admission to Fort York while the Aboriginal Pavilion’s active run? Fort York is  one of Toronto’s museums and a national historic site. It’s well worth the time to visit.

This is also a place to escape crowds, based on the Toronto Star articles, “Pan Am First Nations festival too ‘tucked away,’ say exhibitors“.  Sarah-Joyce Battersby’s article indicates this indigenous festival is worth seeing; it just didn’t get enough publicity (amid all the news about the medals – woot! – and the really excellent TO2015 volunteers).

Where is Fort York in Toronto? I’d provided directions near the end of a previous article, “Commemorate the Battle of York in the War of 1812“. During the TO2015 PanAm Games, it’s easier to say that it’s a short walk from the Princes’ Gates of the CNE (at Lake Shore Blvd W. and Strachan Ave.), west and north to Fort York.

Find Free TO2015 PanAm Events in Toronto or the GTA

Where can I find find free TO2015 PanAm Events in Toronto or in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area)? I had wanted to write about this before the start of the PanAm Games, but the official information was not as clear as I’d wanted.

Now that major news sources, such as CBC and the Toronto Star, have covered this topic, here are some more hints. When you find something of interest, follow the links near the end of the article for official details.

Free PanAm Events for TO2015

You can buy tickets for downtown Toronto events such as triathlon and marathon, but parts of these races go outside the venues at the CNE grounds or Ontario Place. You can watch free PanAm sports events on the parts of the course outside the PanAm facilities. It may be tricky to get there; I’d probably bicycle and then walk the bike where it’s crowded.

Still in downtown Toronto, head to Queen’s Quay for sailing’s preliminary races. Sugar Beach is the most central location, but there are other spots along Queen’s Quay with a view of parts of the harbour. Take along your binoculars! The sailing regatta is a non-ticketed event.

Time trials for road cycling are held in Milton, Ontario; you can watch for free.

I’d noticed a comment in Reddit/toronto that it was possible to watch figure roller skating for free through a chain-link fence at the PAC (University of Toronto Scarborough’s outdoor field area, which is part of the PanAm Aquatic Centre). However, that event is over.

Remember that the TO2015 ParaPan competitions in August will showcase athletes with every bit the same grit and determination as those competing in the PanAm games without those physical challenges.

The combined PanAm Games and ParaPan Games offer once-in-a-lifetime Toronto summer events; and some are free.

Free Music and Thrills for TO2015

The Panamania celebrations are in full swing at a number of sites. Toronto loves free music; find a convenient location and enjoy it.

I’d run past the PanAm zip line at Harbourfront on Queen’s Quay; apparently that’s also a free thrill for the fans!

Officially, the TO2015 road cycling time trials are not ticketed. The dates are July 22 (PanAm) and Aug. 13 (ParaPan); both at 11am.

Officially, the TO2015 sailing regatta is not ticketed at Sugar Beach; but the dates are July 18 and 19.

Check the maps for the various TO2015 events with start/finish at Ontario Place West; often the course goes farther west outside the ticketed area.

Both the Toronto Star and CBC researched this topic, in “Where to watch PanAm… free” and “PanAm Games… without a ticket“.
