What is the Midsummer Night Run in Toronto?

A Midsummer Night’s Run is an annual summer event in Toronto: a charity run that starts before sundown and ends by the light of the moon. The run distances are 30Km, 15Km and 5Km; they also host a 15Km walk. Each discipline has its own start time; and the routes vary by distance.

The charity is the SickKids Foundation, which serves the Hospital for Sick Children. You could sponsor one of the participants, or just donate to them via a link on the Midsummer Night Run’s “SickKids Foundation” page.

The Midsummer Night Run in Toronto has two gimmicks. One is the start time, about 10 or so hours later than the usual “early in the morning” start for most charity runs. The other is that they frequently refer to Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. They call the runners “mortals” but encourage running in costumes suitable for Titania, Oberon or Puck… Shakespeare’s fairies. Or you could run in any costume… the “Nun’s Habit” is not from a previous Midsummer Night Run but would probably be appropriate, if not too warm.

The 2014 Midsummer Night Run in Toronto will take place on Saturday Aug. 16. Each route is in south-east Toronto. The Midsummer Night Run site has route information and maps, but here’s a brief summary.

  • The 5Km starts at the Balmy Beach Canoe Club (south of Queen St. at Silver Birch). The follows the Martin Goodman Trail west to Commissioner’s at Leslie, then ends at the foot of Logan Ave.
  • Both the 15Km and 30Km routes begin at Bouchette and Lake Shore Blvd East, just west of Logan. Both use Commisioner’s, Leslie and Tommy Thompson Park (the Leslie Street Spit). However, the 30Km route starts with a tour of Cherry St. and part of the Martin Goodman Trail. Both end at the foot of Logan Ave.

Training for the 15Km Midsummer Night Run in Toronto

Two Toronto Running Room stores hold “10 Miler” clinics, which train runners to stretch their distance to ten miles (16Km) from a starting ability of about 5Km. On May 29, I started instructing the 10 Miler at the Beaches Running Room on Queen St. East. We have room for several more runners, if you can already cover 5 to 8 Km. The clinic takes 12 weeks and finishes right in time for the Midsummer Night Run as the goal race. If you can already handle this distance but want to get faster, the clinic can help with that too. Don’t delay; the online registration already shows this clinic “is in week 1” (as of May 30), but still allows you to sign up.

Each week, the 10 Miler clinic holds 3 training runs. Sunday morning runs increase in distance. Wednesday night runs gradually increase in intensity. On Thursday nights, the group runs after meeting for a brief talk. (Topics include: how to select a running shoe; what to eat for running; how to warm up and cool down; motivation and setting goals; and how to prepare for a race).

Disclosure and Disclaimer

Disclosure: I do indeed earn a small commission for each person who joins a clinic that I instruct. But if you want some help getting to the 15Km distance, the clinic fee is worth it. Plus you get the T-shirt. If you’re finding it tough to train on your own… well, we’re there for you.

At least one other Running Room store in Toronto offers the 10 Miler program; they start a week later. Start with this Running Room clinics page if you’re looking for other locations or other training distances.

How many free spring events can you visit in Toronto during the May 24-25, 2014 weekend? I found four, although one of them is a multi-venue extravaganza:

  • The “Small Paintings for Small Spaces” art show by the Beach Guild of Fine Art runs Friday through Sunday.
  • “EV Day”, or “Electric Vehicles in Toronto”, is at Yonge-Dundas Square only on Saturday May 24.
  • “Doors Open” on Saturday and Sunday for the Toronto Spring 2014 event. Check the “Gangways Open” specialty event at Harbourfront.

The Beach Guild of Fine Art hosts Small Paintings for Spring 2014

"Cottage in Kew Garden" by John Vetterli

The Beach Guild of Fine Art runs an annual art show and sale. It’s free to enter the Gardener’s Cottage in Kew Gardens, and you could buy any painting for under $350. (I assume HST will be charged on top of the list price).

The times are:

  • Friday: 3pm-8pm
  • Saturday and Sunday: 10am-5pm

Take the 501 Queen streetcar east past Woodbine to Kew Gardens and walk south. Or bike the Martin Goodman trail to the eastern Beaches.

A painting could be a great gift, or you may find something to fill an empty spot on your wall.

Plus, Kew Gardens and the Boardwalk are gorgeous for walking amidst grass and trees, with a terrific view of Lake Ontario.

Electric Vehicles at Yonge-Dundas Square in Toronto for Spring 2014

The CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) presents “EV Day” at Yonge-Dundas Square from 10am-7pm. (And I had to dig like crazy to learn “When is EV Day in Toronto” or “What time is EV Day in Toronto”. Sheesh… where are the professional marketers for that web page?).

The sponsors offer free test drives of EVs, including the Chevy VOLT, Ford Fusion Energi, smart fourtwo, and others.

Assuming the subway is running on Sat. May 24, 2014, simply take “Line 1” (formerly “Yonge”) and disembark at Dundas.

Doors Open Toronto for Spring 2014

The annual Doors Open event provides an amazing chance to get behind the scenes in some of the great, or obscure, buildings in Toronto. You just have to go to the official site to select what’s nearby, your favourite interest, or where there’s a cluster that you can cover in an afternoon. Each venue has its own opening and closing times.

But… let me highlight “Gangways Open” at Harbourfront, simply because it’s such a great location to visit anyway. But the “Gangways Open” event includes free tours of over a dozen ships, a free photo exhibit, and a free concert at 4:30pm at the WestJet stage.

Woofstock Toronto in Spring 2014

The spring Woofstock event moved from downtown to Woodbine Park, giving lots more room for you and your own dogs to roam. The times are 10am-6pm both Saturday and Sunday.

Woofstock offers entertaining events and competitions, as well as many vendors of products for canines.

Woodbine Park is bounded by Lake Shore Blvd East, Coxwell, Eastern Avenue and Northern Dancer. Take the 22 Coxwell bus south from “Line 2” (the Bloor/Danforth subway), or the 501 Queen streetcar, or bicycle on the Martin Goodman Trail.

Ideas for a Toronto Vacation or Staycation

My blog notes many of the annual Toronto events that I find interesting, with fascinating, free or frugal things to do in Toronto. I especially like to cover summer attractions and special events in Toronto Canada; but especially for Canadian holidays.

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including Metro Toronto Zoo coupons. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the Metro Toronto Zoo discount tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple things to do in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do while vacationing in Toronto Canada, and at a bargain price thanks to the discount coupons.
