What does the Toronto Mennonite Festival Support?

The Toronto Mennonite Festival had been known as the Black Creek Pioneer Village Relief Sale for decades, but re-branded itself a few years ago.

TMF continues to support Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), an inter-Mennonite agency committed to international aid and relief, community development, as well as peace and justice initiatives. For example, MCC partners with Citizenship and Immigration Canada to support international refugees, as introduced in “The Blended Refugee Sponsorship Project 2015“. Although the world’s attention recently turned to Syrian refugees, MCC also supports relief programs right in Syria; see their “Syria and Iraq Crisis” article.

Three Venues for Day of the Dead 2014 in Toronto

More accurately, Toronto has days and nights of the dead. Some are on the proper Nov. 1st date; others have become annual autumn Toronto events a week later.

Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, is an annual festival with religious and cultural overtones. Its roots are in Aztec religion, but has strong ties to Mexican (and other) Roman Catholic influences. The European Christian name for Nov. 1st is All Hallows Day, which follows All Hallows Eve (shortened to Hallowe’en). “All Hallows” refers to the revered dead; the Lord’s Prayer says “Hallowed be Thy Name” with the same sense of reverence. The Day of the Dead also notes the deceased; but with more of a cultural flavour than merely going to church for a quiet service of remembrance.

How could you experience part of the Day of the Dead?

Wychwood Barns is at 601 Christie Street (south of St. Clair Ave. West, and a few blocks west from Bathurst St.). My apologies for not noticing this event until CityTV News broadcast a quick clip of the dance ceremony.

2014 Día de los Muertos Celebration at Evergreen Brickworks

The Evergreen Brickworks spends two days for their Día de los Muertos Celebration. Also called “Weekend of the Dead”, Saturday’s special was a screening of Night of the Living Dead. Sunday features food, music, dancing and special activities for the children.

Evergreen Brickworks is in the Don Valley, on the west side of Bayview Ave., south from Pottery Road but north of the ramp to Danforth Avenue.

Harbourfront Delays the Day of the Dead

Harbourfront Centre’s programming for Day of the Dead culture has consistently been about a week late. The Scotiabank Day of the Dead presentations will be Nov. 8-9, 2014.

Verónica Valerio will sing and play the harp both Sat. and Sun. from 1-2pm in the Brigantine Room. Stay for Mariachi Flor de Toloache; this band plays from 3-4pm both days.

If your children prefer film, Harbourfront will screen La Leyenda De La Nahuala (The Legend Of Nahuala) four times on the weekend.

Only on Saturday, the whole family can practice crafts based on Days of the Dead tales as told on-site for groups of different ages. This is only on Saturday from noon to 1pm in Miss Lou’s Room.

The Toronto Harbourfront Centre is at 235 Queen’s Quay West. I’d take the subway to Union Station and walk south to Queen’s Quay, then west on the south side.
