Will I Benefit from Resuming Hill Training?

Perhaps it’s too obvious that I do expect to benefit from “Resuming Hill Training with Gentle Uphill Running“. My latest article in DeHaan Fitness admits that I found even a gradual but long uphill slope to be challenging, once I’d lost the discipline of regular hill interval training.

Hill Training as an Aerobic Exercise for Running Fitness

While it’s easier to regain a level of fitness than to build it up the first time, the significant benefits of regular aerobic exercise will keep me heading back to the hills for more. But for now, I’m going to concentrate on the baseline of running uphill at a gentle pace rather than pushing to my maximum aerobic limits.

And if you’re at all like me, and the other runners, cyclists and even a rollerblade enthusiast whom I saw on a bike trail along Lakeshore Blvd in Toronto today (Boxing Day 2014): take advantage of the mild weather! It’s a lot easier to exercise outdoors when the trails and sidewalks are bare of snow.

What is the Midsummer Night Run in Toronto?

A Midsummer Night’s Run is an annual summer event in Toronto: a charity run that starts before sundown and ends by the light of the moon. The run distances are 30Km, 15Km and 5Km; they also host a 15Km walk. Each discipline has its own start time; and the routes vary by distance.

The charity is the SickKids Foundation, which serves the Hospital for Sick Children. You could sponsor one of the participants, or just donate to them via a link on the Midsummer Night Run’s “SickKids Foundation” page.

The Midsummer Night Run in Toronto has two gimmicks. One is the start time, about 10 or so hours later than the usual “early in the morning” start for most charity runs. The other is that they frequently refer to Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. They call the runners “mortals” but encourage running in costumes suitable for Titania, Oberon or Puck… Shakespeare’s fairies. Or you could run in any costume… the “Nun’s Habit” is not from a previous Midsummer Night Run but would probably be appropriate, if not too warm.

The 2014 Midsummer Night Run in Toronto will take place on Saturday Aug. 16. Each route is in south-east Toronto. The Midsummer Night Run site has route information and maps, but here’s a brief summary.

  • The 5Km starts at the Balmy Beach Canoe Club (south of Queen St. at Silver Birch). The follows the Martin Goodman Trail west to Commissioner’s at Leslie, then ends at the foot of Logan Ave.
  • Both the 15Km and 30Km routes begin at Bouchette and Lake Shore Blvd East, just west of Logan. Both use Commisioner’s, Leslie and Tommy Thompson Park (the Leslie Street Spit). However, the 30Km route starts with a tour of Cherry St. and part of the Martin Goodman Trail. Both end at the foot of Logan Ave.

Training for the 15Km Midsummer Night Run in Toronto

Two Toronto Running Room stores hold “10 Miler” clinics, which train runners to stretch their distance to ten miles (16Km) from a starting ability of about 5Km. On May 29, I started instructing the 10 Miler at the Beaches Running Room on Queen St. East. We have room for several more runners, if you can already cover 5 to 8 Km. The clinic takes 12 weeks and finishes right in time for the Midsummer Night Run as the goal race. If you can already handle this distance but want to get faster, the clinic can help with that too. Don’t delay; the online registration already shows this clinic “is in week 1” (as of May 30), but still allows you to sign up.

Each week, the 10 Miler clinic holds 3 training runs. Sunday morning runs increase in distance. Wednesday night runs gradually increase in intensity. On Thursday nights, the group runs after meeting for a brief talk. (Topics include: how to select a running shoe; what to eat for running; how to warm up and cool down; motivation and setting goals; and how to prepare for a race).

Disclosure and Disclaimer

Disclosure: I do indeed earn a small commission for each person who joins a clinic that I instruct. But if you want some help getting to the 15Km distance, the clinic fee is worth it. Plus you get the T-shirt. If you’re finding it tough to train on your own… well, we’re there for you.

At least one other Running Room store in Toronto offers the 10 Miler program; they start a week later. Start with this Running Room clinics page if you’re looking for other locations or other training distances.

5K to Couch in One Bad Training Week

My recent DeHaan Fitness article, “My Worst Week of 5K Training for the Resolution Run“, explains why I had a terrible training week before a running event, and what I did about it. Have you ever had “down time” in your exercise program? Read my suggestion there.

(Added Dec. 30, 2013): If you just want to skip to the ending, learn how my race went in “My End of 2013 Resolution Run after a Bad Training Week“.

Lemons or Lemonade?

It’s not the lemons, it’s the quality of lemonade that you can make from them! That’s part of the writing tip in my promotional article, “Lemonade versus a Week of 5K Training“.

About the Annual 5K Resolution Run in Canada

The Running Room chain of stores promotes the annual 5Km Resolution Run.

It’s usually held early on New Year’s Day, to mark our “resolution” to become fitter and healthier.

The Resolution Run in Toronto will be held on Sunday Dec. 29, 2013 rather than on New Year’s Day. I assume that it was too expensive or difficult to arrange for a venue on Wednesday. The non-competitive race will be held at the Canadian National Exhibition. Apparently we have to run two laps within the CNE grounds; so no motorists should complain about road closures on our account.

Other cities across Canada also host the Resolution Run. It’s well worth the entry fee just for the running jacket; keep that in mind during 2014!

What about the 5K and Couch?

I’m referring to “C25K:The Couch to 5K Beginner Running Program” in the Kindle e-reader format. Even couch potatoes can become 5Km runners in only a few months. As one reviewer said, it “gives practical advice we may forget”.

Canadians should link to Amazon.ca for “The Couch to 5K Beginner“.  Americans, please use Amazon.com’s “The Couch to 5K Beginner“.

By the way, I hope to lead a Running Room 10Km clinic in early January 2014 at the Running Room store in the Toronto Beach neighbourhood. If you can already run 5Km and want to double your distance, it’s a great program. Contact the store for details.

How Many Miles is a 5K Run?

Since “how many miles is a 5K” is a popular question, let’s answer it. 5 kilometres is almost exactly 3 miles.

For your convenience and reference for :

  • 1 mile is 5280 feet or 63,360 inches; that’s about 1.61 kilometres. We usually round to 1.6Km.
  • 1 kilometre is about 0.62 miles.
  • 5Km is 5 X 0.62 = 3.1 miles.
  • 10Km therefore is 6.2 miles.
  • A running marathon is exactly 26 miles and 385 yards; that’s 42.2Km, within a few centimetres.
  • That’s why Americans run “26.2” and Canadians “42.2” for a marathon!
