R.I.P. Danny Kassap, Canadian Marathon Runner

As noted in the National Post and by other news media, Canadian marathon runner Danny Kassap died overnight May 1-2, 2011. Kassap was 28 years old.

He was best known for winning the 2004 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 2004, in a time of 2:14:50. That improved the course record for “open men” by about 3 minutes…enough time to run another 930 metres, or well over half a mile.

A refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, he lived for a time at Covenant House in Toronto. With hard work and a smiling nature, he achieved a better life for himself. This included attaining official “refugee” status and, later, his Canadian citizenship.

(Some of the above facts were noted from Alan Brookes’ Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon site).

He died a day after “not finishing” the Sporting Life 10Km run in Toronto, complaining of ill health. No cause of death was given. But, this was not the first time his heart failed.

In 2008, he collapsed while running the Berlin marathon. There, bystanders and emergency response staff administered CPR. A cold virus had stopped his heart; but he was revived and began a slow recovery.

Rest in peace, Danny Kassap.
