The Early Bird of Canada Day Fireworks at Harbourfront

Harbourfront jumps the gun with a fireworks display on June 30, 2014 at 10:40pm at Canada Square (235 Queen’s Quay West).

Two barges out on Lake Ontario serve as the launch site for the OLG Canada Eve Fireworks show, which are set to music.

Give yourself lots of time to get there, since Queen’s Quay is still under construction. It’s an short “walk south on York Street from Union Station”, and west a bit along Queen’s Quay. Or take a bus along the 509 streetcar route from Union Station, the southernmost point on the #1 (Yonge-University) subway line.

Centennial Park Hosts Ribs and Fireworks for 2014 Canada Day

Toronto Ribfest begins in Centennial Park on Friday June 27 and runs through the holiday weekend. The Rotary Club offers BBQ beyond simple ribs, as well as free live music. Kids will enjoy the magic shows, face painting, and rides.

The fireworks launch on July 1st at 10pm at Centennial Park in Etobicoke. The park is bounded by Eglinton Ave. West, Centennial Park Blvd, Rathburn and Centennial Park Road.

Milliken Park on Canada Day

Milliken Park’s Canada Day fireworks begin at dusk on July 1st; the earliest time on July 1. The park is at 5555 Steeles Ave East; its boundaries include McCowan, Steeles, Middlefield and several smaller streets on the south.

Ashbridges Bay Park and Woodbine Park: Double-Header in the Beach Neighbourhood on Canada Day

(This section was updated on June 28, 2014). I usually attend Canada Day fireworks at Ashbridges Bay Park,  at Coxwell and south of Lake Shore Blvd East. Fireworks begin at 10pm. With the delays on the 501 Queen streetcar due to construction at Broadview, I’d take the #2 (Bloor-Danforth) subway line and the southbound 22 Coxwell bus to Queen Street.

My big advice is to take transit. We always walk a few blocks… and “we” means “hundreds of neighbours”. The streets are closed briefly for this event, so arrive with a few hours to spare.

How to pass those few hours? Enjoy the Q107 picnic in Woodbine Park, on the north side of Lake Shore. This picnic features live music from noon until the Ashbridges Bay fireworks; midway rides (mainly for children) and a beer garden (for the rest). My wife and I usually watch the fireworks from Woodbine Park anyway; the view is almost as good as from Ashbridges Bay.

Or enjoy the extra time by strolling the boardwalk just south of Toronto’s Eastern Beach neighbourhood. You will probably find more beach volleyball than you can watch from any one vantage point.

Amesbury Park Fireworks on Canada Day

Amesbury Park’s Canada Day fireworks display also starts at 10pm. Amesbury is at 1507 Lawrence Ave West; the park’s boundaries include Culford, Lawrence Ave. West, residences on Keele St., and smaller streets to the south.

However, their Canada Day celebrations start at 11AM. They include a BBQ, entertainment for children and adults, and a marketplace.

Stan Wadlow Park Fireworks Display

Stan Wadlow Park has the latest start time for their fireworks display, which only begin at 10:15pm. But like Amesbury, the festivities begin at 11AM. See the antique cars, enjoy the live entertainment, or dip in the swimming pool between noon and 7pm.

Stan Wadlow is at 373 Cedarvale Ave; bounded by Cedarvale, Cosburn, Haldon and Taylor Creek Park.

(Added June 30): Fireworks Display in Mel Lastman Square

Mel Lastman Square is slow to begin the 2014 Canada Day festivities, with a 5pm start time. The free agenda includes live music with Justin Rutledge and others; Zero Gravity Circus performing Circus Wonderland; activities for children; and fireworks. It’s not clear those doing children’s body art (face-painting, and Canadian flag “tattoos”) work gratis or charge; but you’d want to tip them, I’m sure.

Take the #1 (Yonge) subway to Mel Lastman Square at 5100 Yonge just north of Sheppard.

Canada’s Wonderland is an Exceptional Fireworks Venue on Canada Day

While all the City of Toronto parks are free to enter, you still have to pay admission to Canada’s Wonderland for their Canada Day fireworks display at 10pm.

Canada’s Wonderland is in the city of Vaughan, near Major Mackenzie and Hwy 400. This is the only venue I’ve noted where you have to pay admission. But Wonderland is also exceptional for hosting fireworks on a mountain… “Top that, Toronto”!

Previous Toronto Fireworks Displays

Last year I’d written: “Watch Fireworks in Toronto for Victoria Day 2013” and “Eleven Free Toronto GTA Fireworks Displays for Canada Day 2013“. The latter covered the GTA, not just Toronto; check it out for those municipalities.

Did I miss any public fireworks displays in Toronto? Let me know!

While you can buy fireworks in Toronto, the city officially discourages people from lighting their own. That’s part of the reason for watching public fireworks; Toronto puts on a good show so you don’t have to take the risks.

You can find more annual events for your vacation in Toronto Ontario; or for local residents wanting things to do in Toronto this weekend.

Ideas for a Toronto Vacation or Staycation

My blog notes many of the annual Toronto events that I find interesting, and provides ideas for fascinating, free or frugal things to do in Toronto. I especially like to cover summer attractions and special events in Toronto Canada; but especially for Canadian holidays.

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including Metro Toronto Zoo coupons. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the Metro Toronto Zoo discount tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple things to do in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do while vacationing in Toronto Canada, and at a bargain price thanks to the discount coupons.
