Dundas West, Riverdale or 100-in-1 in Toronto in June 2014

It’s June 2014, and already annual Toronto summer events are piling up for the June 7-8 weekend. Choose from the Dundas West Fest, the Riverdale Art Walk or participate almost anywhere in the “100 in 1 Day in Toronto” events. All of these are mainly free, although you can make clever purchases along the way.

(Added June 7, 2014): A few nights ago, I cleared my Sunday morning to participate in the annual Toronto Challenge run. It offers a 5Km run or walk, as well as a 1Km route. This charity supports organizations that offer assisted living in Toronto, such as long term care facilities for the aged or challenged. Although I didn’t have time to collect pledges, I will still sign up inside Metro Hall at the corner of Wellington & John Streets. It’s only $20 to run with hundreds of others. Register in person from 7:30-8:45am. The warm-up starts at 9:00, and the run begins at 9:30. My Novel Route for the 2012 Toronto Challenge is still accurate about the course. The official 2014 Toronto Challenge site has more details.

The 2014 Dundas West Fest in Toronto

The 2014 Dundas West Fest runs June 7 from 11:00 am-10:00 pm, on Dundas St. W. between Lansdowne and Ossington.

Five venues host shows throughout that time: the Alegria, Amigo, Kids’, Lakeview Ave., and Lulu World stages.

  • Alegria Stage, at 1653 Dundas St. W., between Margueretta and Brock, emphasizes bands and dancers.
  • Amigo Stage, at 1525Dundas St. W., between Dufferin and Sheridan, features comedy and drama.
  • The Kids’ Stage, at St. Clarens Avenue (St. Helen’s Church is at this corner, at 1680 Dundas St. W.), showcases performances by students.
  • Lakeview Ave. Stage (approx. 1699 Dundas St. W.) hosts a variety of musical groups.
  • Lulu World Stage (at Dundas St. W. and Sheridan Ave.) caters to an international range of music.

Naturally the Portuguese community has a strong presence at the Dundas West Fest. Nearly hidden in their web site but sure to be noticed on site, buskers will also entertain on Dundas St W. Fire Guy, who may have changed his moniker from “Fireboy” in the image above, will perform.

And what’s an outdoor street festival in Toronto without food? Buy your lunch or supper from the local Toronto restaurants at Dundas West Fest, too.

I would expect Dundas W. to be closed June 7 for this festival, but I don’t see any official information. Rather than drive, I’d take the Line 2 subway (Bloor/Danforth) to Ossington and take the 63 Ossington bus south.

However, the Portuguese Week Festival will close the south lane of Dundas W. on Sunday June 8 from 1:30-4:30 pm between Crawford St. and Montrose Ave for the Portugal Day Parade. (Search for “Crawford St” in that PDF).

2014 Riverdale Art Walk in Toronto

Enjoy the 2014 Riverdale Art Walk for the full weekend of June 7-8, 2014 on Queen St. East near the southern border of Jimmie Simpson Park.

About 130 artists are represented, with outdoor exhibits from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday. An anonymous jury process selects the participants from upcoming and established artists.

While the official site is a bit sketchy (sorry for the pun on graphic art “sketches” versus “lacking in details”), they do promise entertainment and food for sale. This is, after all, an annual outdoor summer event in Toronto!

The 501 Queen streetcar is detouring around the Queen and Leslie intersection, so I’d head south from Broadview Station on line 2 (Bloor-Danforth) and take the 504 King streetcar down to Queen. It’s a short walk east to Jimmie Simpson Park.

The 2014 “100 in 1 Day” Events in Toronto

The 100-in-1 umbrella invites you to organize, or participate in, one of many interventions in your home town. In 2014, the 100-in-1 in Toronto will take place June 7. Here are just three examples at two locations.

I noticed the Big Bam Boom Youth-Led Arts Festival because it continues the “arts and culture” theme from the Riverdale Art Walk. What’s different? First, there are two venues: the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) at 317 Dundas St. W.; and the school at 180 Shaw St. (between Queen and College, just west of Trinity Bellwood Park). The AGO will host Aboriginal hoop dance, African dance and drum, hip-hop dance, plus visual arts and the spoken word. Visual arts will be on display at the school on Shaw St. Both venues will be open from noon to 5:00 pm on June 7, 2014.

Participate in two separate interventions in Nordheimer Ravine. (It’s on the south side of St. Clair W. at Spadina; it extends west towards the St. Clair West subway station at Bathurst St.). From 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, Elise Cotter welcomes you to a Ravine Scavenger Hunt. She invites you to “walk the trail, find hidden objects, decipher clues and learn about… the ravines”. From 2:00-3:30 pm, Susan Aaron will focus on Re-inventing Nature with Culture. She will lead a walk “from the west end near Well’s Hill to… Boulton Drive”.

As of June 2 at 3:00pm, the 100-in-1 site lists 148 interventions for Toronto. No, I’m not going to list them all. The site includes a handy map: just hover your mouse over a virtual “pin” to see the title; then click to visit that specific intervention’s page. It also lists all the events as a grid of pictures and summaries down the page.

Links to Official Web Pages for Dundas West Fest, Riverdale Art Walk and 100-in-1 in Toronto for June 2014

Over the years, I’ve found that some official pages for annual Toronto events are refreshed each year; other links die eventually. Hopefully these will continue to be useful in the future.

The official Dundas West Fest site will likely be refreshed annually. Note the navigation links at the top of the page.

This is the most useful Riverdale Art Walk page currently available. It’s part of the Toronto Artists Network site, so the home page is worth visiting throughout the year.

The official 100 in 1 Day Interventions in Toronto for 2014 web page might be refreshed each year, or it might be specific to 2014. At the moment, it’s a must-visit page to learn the current plans.

I found the Portugal Day Parade plan in the Portuguese Alliance… web site.

(Added June 8, 2014): Autism Speaks Canada at Toronto City Hall in 2014

So why had I not known about the Autism Speaks Canada charity walk from Toronto City Hall? I ran through Nathan Phillips Square this morning on my way to the Toronto Challenge run at Metro Hall, and noticed the banners and a crowd beginning to form.

The Autism Speaks charity uses a variety of events in different Canadian cities. This year, they’ve already held events in Montreal and Kitchener-Waterloo; but Central Okanagan Valley, Edmonton, London, Ottawa, Saskatoon, and Vancouver are still in the future. They also partner with half/marathon events such as this autumn’s Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon; and provide even more fund-raising ideas on the official Autism Speaks Canada participation page.

Looking for More Annual Events in Toronto Canada?

You can find more annual events for your vacation in Toronto Ontario; or for local residents wanting things to do in Toronto this weekend. My blog tracks some of the many annual Toronto events that I find interesting, and provides ideas for fascinating, free or frugal things to do. I especially like to cover summer attractions and special events in Toronto Canada; but especially for Canadian holidays.

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including Metro Toronto Zoo coupons. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the Metro Toronto Zoo discount tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple things to do in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do while vacationing in Toronto Canada, and at a bargain price thanks to the discount coupons.
