When is the 2014 Family Day in Canada?

It may be a bit early to answer the question “When is the 2014 Family Day in Canada?”, but some of us feel a need to look forward to our next Canadian holidays.

Some provinces will have longer to wait for their holidays than others, since they neither celebrate “Family Day” nor any other in February. Let’s tackle the issue alphabetically by province or territory.

2014 Family Day in Alberta

Alberta recognizes the third Monday of February as Family Day. So the province famous for oil wells and ranches will enjoy Monday Feb. 17, 2014 as family time.

2014 Family Day in British Columbia

“Family Day BC” is the earliest in Canada. Sometimes known as “BC Day”, British Columbia uses the second Monday of February. So in Vancouver, Victoria and its other sundry cities and unspoiled wilderness, the families of British Columbia will pause to enjoy Monday Feb. 10, 2014.

2014 Louis Riel Day in Manitoba

Manitoba celebrates Louis Riel Day on the third Monday of February. He had hoped to lead the Métis people living in this region, but was found guilty of treason for his role in the 1885 Rebellion. Ponder history in Manitoba on Louis Riel Day, Feb. 17, 2014.

No Family Day in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Nunavut or the North-West Territories

I found neither “Family Day” nor any other special holidays for these hard-working provinces and territories.

2014 Family Day in Ontario

In a rare display of solidarity, Ontario agrees with Alberta that Family Day arrives on the third Monday of February. So this populous provinces will celebrate the “2014 Family Day Ontario” on Monday Feb. 17, 2014.

(Added Feb. 10, 2014): Do you need some activities for Family Day 2014 in Toronto? Read about “Six Civic Museums for 2014 Family Day in Toronto” and get some bonus information on the 2014 Toronto Kids Fest, located north-west of the city itself. “Family Fun Fest” in northwest Toronto is yet another bonus reference in my article.

2014 Islander Day in Prince Edward Island

While PEI agrees to take the third Monday of February off work, it’s known as “Islander Day”. Perhaps the good folk of PEI will take the day to re-read “Anne of Green Gables” on Monday Feb. 17, 2014.

(Actually, I’d recommend the Kindle edition of “Anne of Green Gables Stories: 12 Books, 142 Short Stories, … , Chronicles and More“. This collection has more content for the same price as other Kindle e-books dealing with Anne. Download it from Amazon.ca or, for Americans, from Amazon.com. On Jan. 4, 2014, both editions are priced at just under a dollar).

No Family Day in the Province of Québec

Alors, but la belle province must wait until the month of May for their “National Patriots Day”, the Monday just prior to the Victoria Day weekend in the rest of Canada.

2014 Family Day in Saskatchewan

Along with Ontario and Alberta, Saskatchewan recognizes Family Day as the third Monday of February. May the potash mines rest undisturbed on Feb. 17, 2014.

2014 Heritage Day in Yukon Territory

Last of Canada’s provinces and territories in the alphabet, the Yukon also pauses the longest for its February holiday. They wait until the final Friday of February for “Heritage Day”, which may signal the start of a weekend celebrating their territorial history and character. Friday Feb. 21, 2014 marks Yukon Heritage Day this year.

Ideas for a Toronto Vacation or Staycation

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including Metro Toronto Zoo coupons. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the Metro Toronto Zoo discount tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple things to do in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do while vacationing in Toronto Canada, and at a bargain price thanks to the discount coupons.
