Find Your 2014 New Year Levee in Toronto or in the GTA

What is a New Year Levée? Where can you find a New Year Levée in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) or in Toronto itself?

What is a New Year Levée?

The concept of a New Year Levée is that the monarch, his or her representative, or any politician will host a reception on New Year’s Day. Meet some dignitaries, shake their hands, enjoy a non-alcoholic drink, and perhaps go skating.

We note that, in France, the monarchy did not survive the French Revolution despite inventing this custom.

More specifically, “levée” means “risen”: gentlemen would attend the King to help him get up, first thing in the morning.

While many articles have “New Year Levee”, I prefer to keep the French version (except in titles, because some web browsers mess up the accented ‘é‘ in links).

Most New Year Levees are held in the afternoon of New Year’s Day; but some are postponed to the following Sunday (or even later).

The “Lieutenant Governor’s 2014 New Year’s Levee” runs from noon to 2pm on Wed. Jan. 1st at the Ontario legislature in Queen’s Park. I’d enter by the south door and ask at the front desk. Take the TTC to Queen’s Park on the University subway line, or the 506 Carlton streetcar along College Street to University Avenue.

It’s a short walk south from Queen’s Park to visit Mayor Rob Ford’s New Year Levee at Toronto City Hall on New Year’s Day 2014 from 2-4pm, at the corner of Queen St. West and Bay. Take the subway, or the 501 Queen streetcar.

It’s always tricky to find all the other levées in Toronto. If you can wait until Sunday Jan. 5, 2014, visit with a number of politicians at the Toronto East York Civic Centre from 1-3pm. In her e-mail, Janet Davis promises the event will include “refreshments and Discovery Through the Arts (a music school founded by Madoka Murata)”.

My apologies that the recent ice storm cut into my time for research. Last year, my “Attend a 2013 New Year Levee in Toronto” included an event at Harbourfront and at the Cathedral Church of St. James. I haven’t had the time to pursue these leads for this year. Let me know, if you find them publicized as annual Toronto winter events.

The Royal Canadian Legion in Stouffville hosts its annual New Year’s Day Levee on Wed. Jan. 1st, starting at noon. You can watch the NHL Classic hockey game for free at the Stouffville Legion Hall (Branch 459) at 150 Mostar Street, Stouffville.

In Pickering, the Mayor’s New Year’s Day Levee will be on Wed. Jan. 1, 2014 from 2-4pm at City Hall, One The Esplanade. Let me quote: “Join Mayor Ryan and Members of Council to celebrate the New Year! Free event for the whole family, featuring live music, refreshments, children’s entertainment, prizes…”. Yes, they put in the exclamation mark.

Finally in the GTA, I found the Levée in Newmarket will be held at the Community Centre & Lions Hall, at 200 Doug Duncan Drive, from 1-3pm on Sunday Jan. 5, 2014. It’s free to meet the mayor and members of Council,  enjoy entertainment and refreshments.
