Two Dog Costume Halloween Parades in GTA in 2013

I only found two Hallowe’en parades for dogs in costumes in the GTA for 2013.

The 2013 Courtice Spooky Pet Parade

A Pet Valu store will host a Pet Hallowe’en in Courtice Ontario event  on Sat. Oct. 26, 2013. Register through this Running Room link.

The official name is the “Courtice Spooky Pet Parade“, a joint project by Running Room & Pet Valu to support the Humane Society of Durham Region. “Costumes are optional” although both the people and their pets are encouraged to dress for Hallowe’en.

The walk is only 4.5Km, starting from the Petvalu store at 1414 King St. E. in Courtice, Ontario at 10:30am. (So get there early!) They offer more enticements, including treats and photos. Follow the link for more details on how to register (by Oct. 25), and their link to the route map.

Courtice is on Hwy 2, between Oshawa and Bowmanville.

The 2013 Bark for Life Parade in Mississauga

The “2013 Bark for Life in Mississauga” is a free dog costume Hallowe’en parade and fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Mississauga will host this family event  on Sat. Oct. 26, 2013 from 1-3pm at J.C. Saddington Park, Mississauga. This park is just south-west of the mouth of the Credit River. The park’s boundaries are: Mississauga Road South; Lake Street; Front Street; the Credit River; and Lake Ontario.

This Hallowe’en event is free to attend; but you want to raise funds, you’d better click that link and get cracking.

One Foreign Bonus Event: New York City’s Annual Tompkins Square Hallowe’en Dog Parade

To compare our annual Toronto events to those in New York City, visit the 23rd annual Tompkins Square Hallowe’en Dog Parade from noon to 3pm on Sat. Oct. 26, 2013. Tompkins Square Park is east of Greenwich Village, bounded by East 7th & East 10th, and Avenue A & Avenue B.

Since the above link goes to the home page of dogster.org, the artwork will likely change sometime. Here is a Tompkins Square Dog Run web page.

Notes about Hallowe’en

While Hallowe’en may have pagan roots as Samhain (to honour the dead), and been transformed by the Catholic church into the “eve before All Hallows (All Saints) Day”, we now think of it as a fun night for costumes and trick-or-treat activity for our children. Horror movies are featured in television programming around this time.

The official date for Hallowe’en is always Oct. 31. If the actual date is a weeknight, many Hallowe’en parties and events are held on the preceding weekend.

Ideas for a Toronto Vacation or Staycation

I’ve noted many annual Toronto events that I find interesting, especially if they are fascinating, free or frugal things to do in Toronto Canada for many different holidays. Click the “Toronto Events” category at the bottom of the right-hand column for my recent articles on this topic.

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including Metro Toronto Zoo coupons. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the Metro Toronto Zoo discount tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple things to do in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do while vacationing in Toronto Canada, and at a bargain price thanks to the discount coupons.
