Three Free Labour Day Weekend Events in Toronto for 2013

If you’re looking for free things to do in Toronto for the 2013 Labour Day Weekend, consider these three options. Of course, there are some bonus ideas from some of my previous articles, too.

The three free options are: a free concert at Nathan Phillips Square on Sept. 1st; Artsfest all weekend; and the Hot and Spicy Festival which also fills the weekend. With careful planning, you could enjoy all three and catch the Air Show as a bonus.

(Added Aug. 29, 2013): I finally made time to confirm the Hispanic Fiesta enlivens Mel Lastman Square this weekend, as well as Brazillian Day coincident with Labour Day.

The 2013 Hot and Spicy Festival at Harbourfront

It can be best described as a natural alternative to brand viagra uk. The Hot and Spicy festival combines several free attractions at the Harbourfront venue.

Two Hot and Spicy Markets

Harbourfront hosts the Hot and Spicy Festival throughout the 2013 Labour Day Weekend, from Aug. 30 through Sept. 2. The hours vary: Fri. 6pm-midnight; Sat. and Sun. 10:30am-midnight; Mon. 10:30am-8pm.

It’s free to browse two markets all weekend, but the vendors really hope you will buy hot sauces from the Red Hot Market; or fashions and accessories at the Lake View Market.

These markets are in Zone 3, in Ann Tindale Park, on the south side of Queen’s Quay just west of Lower Simcoe Street.

If you’re outdoors at Harbourfront at the right time of day, and gain a view to the west, you should be able to enjoy much of the Canadian International Air Show without going to the Ex. See my CNE link farther below.

The World Café at Harbourfront

Harbourfront’s World Café offers cuisine from around the world. It’s located at the south-east corner of Ann Tindale Park. World Café will be open Fri. 6pm-midnight; Sat. and Sun. noon-midnight; and Mon. noon-8pm.

This is the only must-pay attraction in this article.

Harbourfront Stages Music to Begin the 2013 Labour Day Weekend

Sauce Rock takes over the Redpath Stage from  7-8pm on Sat. Aug. 31, in the centre of Ann Tindale Park.

Canailles will grace the WestJet Stage Aug. 31 from 9:30-11pm at 235 Queens Quay West. This stage is south-west of the Redpath Stage.

Both concerts are free to attend.

Watch an Iron Chef Competition in the Brigantine Room at Harbourfront

You could also watch two Iron Chef competitions from 1:30-5:30pm on Sunday Sept. 1 in the Brigantine Room. Again, it’s free to attend.

Official Harbourfront Web Page for the 2013 Hot and Spicy Festival

The official Harbourfront Hot and Spicy web page links to each of these 2013 Labour Day Weekend free events.

Artfest in the Distillery District for the 2013 Labour Day Weekend

The Distillery District’s 2013 Labour Day Artfest will run Aug. 30 through Sept. 2, with free admission daily from 11am to 6pm.

The best starting location is the Cafe Uno at 55 Mill Street at Rackhouse Mews. This is west of Cherry Street and well south of Front Street, but north of Lake Shore Blvd East.

This edition of Artfest showcases more artists than I could shake a stick at, so check the official Artfest Exhibitor’s pages to see a sample from each.

A Free Concert at Nathan Phillips Square for Labour Day 2013

What better way to celebrate Labour Day 2013 than a free concert at Nathan Phillips Square on Sunday Sept. 1st? Indeed, what better way for a new labour union, Unifor, to introduce itself to Toronto on their inaugural weekend? Note that “everyone is invited” to enjoy the music. The concert presents free live music by Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Les Colocs, Sister Says, and Stars.

The start time is 6:30pm on Sunday Sept. 1st. The venue is Nathan Phillips Square, in front of City Hall at 100 Queen Street West. You can learn a bit more from the official Unifor concert web page.

Hispanic Fiesta at Mel Lastman Square on the 2013 Labour Day Weekend

The highlight of the Labour Day weekend in North York is the Hispanic Fiesta in Mel Lastman Square. Again, it’s free to attend and enjoy the music, but you will likely spend some money on the food.

The dates are Aug. 30 through Sept. 2. The opening musical act, Imbayakunas, begins at 7pm on Friday the 30th. On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, the program has entertainers beginning at times ranging from 3 to 8:30pm or so. (The City Hall web page says it runs from 2-10pm on Sat./Sun./Mon.; but I’m reporting when the first and last performances begin).

Mel Lastman Square is at 5100 Yonge Street; take the Yonge subway to the North York Centre stop.

See the official Hispanic Fiesta web site for the entertainment lineup, as well as a fascinating look at the charitable group that organizes this Labour Day Weekend fiesta.

Brazillian Day in Toronto Coincides with Labour Day

Brazillian Day Canada hosts a free concert at Nathan Phillips Square on Labour Day, Monday Sept. 2, 2013. Gusttavo Lima is the featured performer, but overall it begins at 1pm and ends at 8pm. This marks the fifth year for Brazil Day in Toronto, so it qualifies as an annual Toronto event.

Will you dance as well as listen? Check the lineup and background at the official Brazillian Day Canada web site.

Are there Labour Day Fireworks in Toronto?

There are no Labour Day fireworks in Toronto, as far as I can tell. Traditionally Canada’s Wonderland shoots fireworks on the Labour Day weekend, but I haven’t found any confirmation.

Head out of town for Labour Day fireworks in Niagara Falls. The Niagara Parks department hosts a free concert at 8pm on Aug. 30, 2013 and on Sept. 1st. These evenings finish with fireworks, wrapping up at about 10pm. In fact, they shoot fireworks on Friday evenings from Sept. 6 through Oct. 11, 2013; these shows are at 10pm.

The official Niagara Parks events calendar has a few more details.

More 2013 Labour Day Weekend Events in Toronto Canada

Both the Canadian International Air Show and Labour Day Parade are still available on Labour Day weekend at the Ex. See my “Enjoy the CNE on the Cheap in 2013” to learn when and how to enjoy them for free.

From “Richard III, Afro Caribbean or Chinatown in Toronto for 2013“, only Shakespeare in the Ruff’s Richard III still runs through Sunday Sept. 1st. It’s well worth the “pay what you can” price; check my article for venue and times.

If you still want other ideas, check last year’s “The End of Summer 2012 Labour Day Weekend in Toronto“. You may find some other annual event in Toronto even more to your liking for this 2013 Labour Day weekend.

Ideas for a Toronto Vacation or Staycation

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including Metro Toronto Zoo coupons. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the Metro Toronto Zoo discount tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple things to do in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do while vacationing in Toronto Canada, and at a bargain price thanks to the discount coupons.
