Richard III, Afro Caribbean or Chinatown in Toronto for 2013

The weekend of August 24-25, 2013 has several annual events in Toronto, although the play by Shakespeare began earlier and ends later.

Richard III via Shakespeare in the Ruff for 2013

Toronto’s Shakespeare in the Ruff theatre troupe reincarnates “Shakespeare in the Rough” in a triumphant return to Withrow Park in Toronto. Along with “The Dream in High Park” productions, “Ruff” presents Shakespeare as annual Toronto summer events.

They present “Richard III” for 2013. My wife and I saw a performance on Aug. 21; we loved it.

Whether you love or loathe manipulative, egocentric control freaks, you won’t be able to turn away from this portrayal of a man who… Okay, I won’t spoil the ending. Or the middle. Or even Richard’s first speech.

My wife noted that it was really easy to follow the dialogue. Some productions of Shakespeare’s plays are pretty dense with “Elizabethan English”: ‘thee’ and ‘thine’ and ‘foresworn knave’, and so forth. This version presents itself very clearly and cleanly.

So just go to Withrow Park at 7pm on Wednesday through Sunday evenings, from Aug. 13th through Sept. 1st. The night starts with music; the virtual curtain rises at 7:30pm.

Bring your own blanket or lawn chairs. Pay what you can. Bring your picnic if you want to arrive early and enjoy the outdoors.

They’ve actually arranged for an indoor venue in case of rain!

You can find Withrow Park south of Danforth Avenue, bounded by Carlaw Ave.,  McConnell Ave., Bain or Withrow, and Logan. If you drive, you’ll find the streets are one-way and a bit of challenge to find street parking. You could easily take the TTC, since Withrow Park is half-way between the Chester and Pape stations on the Bloor-Danforth subway. However, the Pape station is closed for construction through Aug. 30, 2013, so plan to walk east from Chester and south on Logan.

The official “Shakespeare in the Ruff” web site gives more details.

The 2013 Afro Caribbean Festival in Scarborough

For a different cultural experience than Shakespeare in a park, try the 2013 Afro Caribbean Festival in Scarborough.

This event presents music and dance, food, and a children’s play area in the Scarborough Civic Arena and Albert Campbell Square. I think of this location as the Scarborough Town Centre at Ellesmere and McCowan, although Google Maps pinpoints Albert Campbell Square in the north-west section.

The Scarborough Afro Caribbean Festival runs from 10am to 8pm on Saturday and Sunday, August 24 and 25, 2013. Admission is free.

Take the TTC Scarborough LRT to the Scarborough Centre station and head south; or the 16 McCowan bus from Warden to McCowan and Ellesmere.

The official “2013 Afro Caribbean Festival in Scarborough” web page offers some background on the sponsors and events.

The 2013 Chinatown Festival in Toronto

The 13th annual Chinatown Festival in Toronto runs this weekend: Saturday Aug. 24 from noon to 11pm; Sunday Aug. 25 from 11am to 8pm.

The Chinatown Festival has its origins in an early harvest celebration. Dragon dances and lion dances will be spectacularly colourful and active, and noisy with drums. Other live performances will pop up on the streets, along with arts and crafts booths, games and fortune telling. I’d eat my hat if you can’t buy food somewhere along the line. The main stage is on Spadina north of Dundas; a secondary stage is on Huron Street. (Chevrolet sponsors the main stage, and OLG the stage on Huron).

The Chinatown Festival is in downtown Toronto. The street boundaries are from Spadina and Dundas Street West, north to D’Arcy Street (south of Baldwin), and east along D’Arcy to Huron Street. Plus, the east side of Spadina will be involved as far north as College Street. Take the TTC, since it’s a short walk west from the St. Patrick station on the University subway line; or south from College along Spadina from the 506 Carlton street car.

It’s free to walk around, but you might find something worth buying.

Their official Chinatown Festival in Toronto web site still has several areas under construction, but you may want to check it anyway.

Looking for More Annual Events or a Holiday in Toronto Canada?

You can find more annual events for your vacation in Toronto Ontario; or for local residents wanting things to do in Toronto this weekend.

For starters, you could “Enjoy the CNE on the Cheap in 2013” but my best suggestion is for Monday or the CNE Air Show on the Labour Day weekend. Since then I’ve found “Three Free Labour Day Weekend Events in Toronto for 2013“.

I’ve already explained “How to Find the 2013 Toronto Buskerfest“, which is important if you still hope to find them at the St. Lawrence Market. (Hint: they’ve moved).

Ideas for a Toronto Vacation or Staycation

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including Metro Toronto Zoo coupons. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the Metro Toronto Zoo discount tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple things to do in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do while vacationing in Toronto Canada, and at a bargain price thanks to the discount coupons.
