Celebrate the 2013 Ontario Civic Holiday in the GTA

The Ontario Civic Holiday also goes by the name “Simcoe Day”, to honour Colonel John Graves Simcoe. Although I’ve covered some “Toronto Attractions for Simcoe Day, the Ontario Civic Holiday“, you can celebrate the August long weekend with several annual events in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). Or avoid John Graves Simcoe altogether with “Celebrating 2013 Civic Holiday in Toronto without Simcoe Day“.

Actually, I’ve found two for the 2013 Civic Holiday in the GTA; but added a third option for those who really want Simcoe Day fireworks.

(Added July 29, 2014): I just wrote “2014 Civic Holiday Festivals in Toronto“, and updated the link for fireworks at Niagara Falls (well below).

Unionville Celebrates Simcoe Day 2013

On August 5, 2013, Unionville devotes Main Street to celebrate the Ontario Civic Holiday with horse and carriage rides from 1-4pm. These rides hearken back to the days of Colonel Simcoe defending Ontario from American would-be liberators during the War of 1812.

Painting children’s faces might be an attempt to honour the Native Americans who fought on the British side to prevent the Americans from taking over this province. Or it could just be part of the festivities.

If I read my online maps correctly, I’d head to the north end of Main Street where it meets the curve of Carlton Road. At worst, it’s a 1.8Km walk south to YMCA Boulevard where Main Street ends.

If anyone can let me know more details about the centre of the festival, please send an e-mail. I did bicycle here once; the north end of Main Street is a gorgeous tourist area and well worth visiting, especially for the 2013 Ontario Civic Holiday.

Their official “2013 Simcoe Day in Unionville” page offers few other details, although the rest of the site may help.

The 2013 Milton Pirate Festival for the Ontario Civic Holiday Weekend

The city of Milton celebrates Ontario Civic Holiday 2013 with a Long Weekend pirate festival.

The 2013 Milton Pirate Festival runs from Aug. 3-5 from 7-11pm at Country Heritage Park, 8560 Tremaine Road near the 401, Milton, Ontario.

My favourite magician, Zoltan the Adequate, will perform as “Zoltan the Adequate Pirate”. (Is Zoltan amazing? No, just adequate. Really, you have to catch his act to appreciate that line).

Niagara Falls Fires Free Fireworks for Simcoe Day 2013

Outside the GTA but not too far by the QEW highway, the city of Niagara Falls attracts tourists from around the world.

Besides hosting tourists to view Niagara Falls, the city will blasts fireworks over the Falls for the Civic Holiday in Ontario. The free Coca Cola concert will begin at 8pm. The fireworks will burst over Niagara Falls later that night.

(Added July 29, 2014): Here is my updated link for Fireworks at Niagara Falls Park.

The official “2013 Niagara Falls Fireworks Schedule” includes Simcoe Day. Let’s note that this is the only location in Ontario that I could find that offers a Civic Holiday fireworks show. If you know of another, please write me an e-mail (with a link as reference, please & thanks).

Looking for More Annual Events or a Holiday in Toronto?

You can find even more annual events for your vacation in Toronto; or for local residents wanting things to do in Toronto on almost any weekend in the year.

Ideas for a Toronto Vacation or Staycation

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including Metro Toronto Zoo coupons. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the Metro Toronto Zoo discount tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple things to do in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do while vacationing in Toronto, and at a bargain price thanks to the discount coupons.
