Three Cultures Weekend in Toronto mid-July 2013

It’s impossible to properly cover all the annual summer events in Toronto for even a single weekend, but these three cultures invite you to celebrate with them this July 12-14, 2013 weekend.

2013 Caribana TM Flags and Colours Parade in Toronto

Let’s not discuss the “Caribana TM” versus “Caribbean Festival” legal or financial disagreements. (The ‘TM‘ trademark is in the official site, so I’m using it here on their behalf).

The 2013 “Flags and Colours Parade” starts at Driftwood Crescent, basically the park circled in the north-east of the above map, at noon on Saturday July 13. The parade goes south on Jane to the YorkGate Mall, just north of Finch Ave. West.

The official “CaribanaTM Flags and Colours” site says the festival begins at 10am and runs until 6pm. There’s much more to it than just a parade! I’d go to listen to the steel pan drums, but the storytelling and face painting should appeal to children. Caribbean food appeals to everyone.

Just the Details for this Flags and Colours Festival

The Toronto Flags and Colours Festival for Caribana starts between 10am and noon, and runs until 6pm on July 13, 2013. It’s centred on the York Gate Mall on the northwest corner of Finch and Jane; the parade comes down from Driftwood Crescent at noon.

The 2013 Annual Festival of India in Toronto

The 2013 Toronto Festival of India marches its parade on Sat. July 13, 2013 from 11am to 2pm, south on Yonge Street from Bloor and ending at Lake Ontario. (It actually starts just north of Bloor at the Reference Library).

Centre Island is the venue for the Festival of India, both on Saturday afternoon and evening and on Sunday from noon to 5pm.

This annual summer Toronto event celebrates Krishna Consciousness. The Centre Island events include yoga, East Indian cuisine, a bazaar, plus music and entertainment.

I’d written about this India Festival in Toronto last year, in my “Multi-Faceted Toronto Festival of India in July 2012” article; but check the current official “Annual Festival of India” for full details.

If you’re heading to Toronto’s Centre Island, you will want to check the official Toronto Centre Island Ferry Schedule web page. Be sure to click on the “Summer Schedule” for Centre Island: the right-hand side of the table shows the “Saturday, Sunday and Holiday” departure times.

The 2013 Night-Time East Asian Festival in Markham

“Night It Up” is news to me. TD Bank sponsors a “Night Market” on the July 12-14 weekend at 101 Town Centre Blvd, the Markham Civic Centre.

Much of the featured entertainment has a distinctly East Asian flavour; but a “Truck Pull Race” and “Paint-a-thon” might not fit that theme.

Support this festival simply because this year it supports Second Harvest, a non-profit group that makes excess food available to people who truly need it. (Night It Up has supported other charities in the past, starting with Covenant House in 2002 and, most recently, Make-a-Wish Canada in 2012).

Or enjoy watching serious volleyball, eating Asian fusion cuisine, watching a movie or taking in the live performances.

The official Markham Night It Up site has many more details, including the entertainment lineup and times.

Other Options for a July Weekend in Toronto

Do you want other options for this summer weekend in Toronto? I’d just written “The 2013 Salsa on St. Clair Street Festival in Toronto” earlier this week. If you like dancing on the street, Salsa on St. Clair is for you.

My thanks to 680 News for “Weekend events: Honda Indy, Salsa on St. Clair, and more” by Erica Gallipoli, and to Blog TO‘s Lauren Pincente for “Toronto weekend events: July 12-14, 2013“. They suggest yet more options.

From those, I’d highlight “Sound Clash” at Harbourfront and the “White House Art Market at Kensington Market”. They just didn’t fit the theme of this post…sorry.

Looking for More Annual Events or a Holiday in Toronto?

You can find more annual events for your vacation in Toronto; or for local residents wanting things to do in Toronto on almost any weekend in the year.

Ideas for a Toronto Vacation or Staycation

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including Metro Toronto Zoo coupons. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the Metro Toronto Zoo discount tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple things to do in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do while vacationing in Toronto, and at a bargain price thanks to the discount coupons.
