Eleven Free Toronto GTA Fireworks Displays for Canada Day 2013

In a break with my DeHaan Services tradition, here are eleven free 2013 Canada Day fireworks displays in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) but strictly outside of Toronto Ontario.

(Added June 24, 2014): I’ve updated “Toronto” (plus Canada’s Wonderland in Vaughan) in “Find Toronto Fireworks for Canada Day 2014“. However, this article has good clues for the GTA outside of Toronto.

If I missed your municipal fireworks display, or get some details wrong, please let me know. Thanks!

While I normally write about annual Toronto events, including last year’s fireworks in “Canada Day 2012 Celebration Choices in Toronto“, this article will focus entirely on GTA fireworks displays.

The GTA municipalities are listed alphabetically:

  • Aurora
  • Barrie
  • Brampton
  • Markham
  • Mississauga, with two different venues plus one bonus location
  • Newmarket
  • Oshawa
  • Pickering
  • Richmond Hill
  • Stouffville
  • Vaughan
  • Whitby

These cities offer more Canada Day celebrations than simply fireworks exhibitions, but that’s the focus for this article. Please check the links provided for more details. Usually I will assume you can find the park.

My usual advice is to go earlier rather than later. Parking lots fill up; road closures slow your drive; sometimes the organizers start earlier than expected; and there’s more to a Canada Day event than a few explosions. Too many venues say “fireworks at dusk”, which doesn’t do any favours for a person trying to be fashionably late. Leave “just in time” to the manufacturing efficiency experts; you should try to arrive on time.

Canada Day Fireworks in Aurora

The Aurora fireworks are scheduled for dusk on Canada Day in Lambert Willson Park. There’s that word, “dusk”, right in the first Canada Day celebration. Maybe you can find more specific details, or a contact person, at “Canada Day 2013 in Aurora, Ontario“.

Canada Day Fireworks in Barrie

The fireworks in Barrie are in Heritage Park by beautiful Kempenfelt Bay. Barrie fireworks should begin at 10pm on Canada Day. The official page is “Canada Day 2013 in Barrie“.

Canada Day Fireworks in Brampton

Brampton hosts their fireworks in Donald M. Gordon Chinguacousy Park. 9050 Bramalea Road, at Central Park Drive and Queen St. East. Like Barrie, the show begins at 10pm on July 1, 2013. See “Celebrate 2013 Canada Day in Brampton” for more details.

Canada Day Fireworks in Markham

The Canada Day celebrations run in Milne Park from about 3pm; with fireworks at dusk or 10pm. Milne Park is on McCowan Road (south of Hwy 7). I’m not sure why someone thought “dusk” means “10pm”; but if you get there in the afternoon, you can enjoy the rest of what’s explained at “Milne Park Celebration & Fireworks in Markham“.

Canada Day Fireworks in Mississauga

Mississauga serves a double helping of Canada Day fireworks, possibly to atone for missing Victoria Day earlier this year.

Canada Day celebrations begin in the Streetsville Memorial Park at 355 Church St. at 6pm; the fireworks launch at 10pm according to “Streetsville Canada Day Celebrations“.

As well, the Celebration Square event at 300 City Centre Drive also includes fireworks. The new start time is 4pm, but the fireworks probably begin around 10pm. See “Celebrate Canada Day 2013 in Mississauga“.

The Port Credit Bonus: I just discovered that “Paint Port Credit Red for Canada Day 2013” includes fireworks in Memorial Park, sometime in the evening. Head for Stavebank and Lakeshore Road East in Mississauga / Port Credit, on the east bank of the Credit River.

Kanata Day Fireworks in Newmarket

Newmarket calls it “Kanata Day”, but launches fireworks in George Richardson Park, by the Bayview Parkway, at 10pm. Look for the “Kanata Summer Festival in Newmarket: Canada Day Fireworks” paragraph.

Canada Day Fireworks in Oshawa

Oshawa shows fireworks in Lakeview Park at 10pm. Go to the southern end of Simcoe Street at Lakeview Park Avenue. See “Oshawa Canada Day Fireworks” for links to more details.

Canada Day Fireworks in Pickering

Pickering displays fireworks in the Bay Ridges Kinsmen Park, on Sandy Beach Road just north of Montgomery Park Road. The fireworks will be lit sometime after 7pm, which is when the main stage music begins. (Events start at noon and end at 11pm). See “Pickering Canada Day 2013 Celebrations“.

(Added July 2, 2013): I’d like to thank my GTA readers who found this article over a hundred times by searching for “Canada Day fireworks Pickering 2013”. The second busiest key phrase was “Pickering fireworks Canada Day 2013”. Hopefully you all enjoyed the show at the Bay Ridges Kinsmen Park in Pickering; and thanks for finding this article.

Canada Day Fireworks in Richmond Hill

Head for the aptly named Richmond Hill Green Park at 1300 Elgin Mills Road East at Leslie Street. The fireworks start sometime before 11pm, although I’d get there by 10pm. See “Canada Day in Richmond Hill“.

Canada Day Fireworks in Stouffville

The Stouffville fireworks begin at “dusk”, sometime after 7pm, in Franklin Park on Park Drive between Hoover Park Drive and Burkholder Street. See “Canada Day at the Whitchurch Stouffville Strawberry Festival“.

Canada Day Fireworks in Vaughan

Vaughan, the “city above Toronto”, launches fireworks inside the Canada’s Wonderland park at about 10pm. Pay your park admission early in the day and enjoy your visit. Or visit them for some other “Special Events at Canada’s Wonderland“.

Canada Day Fireworks in Whitby

Finally for this list, Whitby fireworks will be in Iroquois Park, 500 Victoria Street West. The events start at high noon and wrap up by 8pm. See “County Town Carnival Celebrates Canada Day in Whitby“.

When is Canada Day?

Canada Day is the first of July, so we Canadians can celebrate with fireworks just before our American friends enjoy their Fourth of July holiday.

Looking for More Annual Events or a Holiday in Toronto?

I’ve found many more annual events for your vacation in Toronto; or for local residents wanting things to do in Toronto on almost any weekend in the year.

(Added June 21, 2013): Fireworks displays are included at about half of the “Dozen Venues for Canada Day 2013 Events in Toronto“.

Ideas for a Toronto Vacation or Staycation

Check the “annual events” or “Toronto events” categories toward the end of the left-hand menu. I especially like to cover summer attractions and special events in Toronto; but especially for Canadian holidays.

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including Metro Toronto Zoo coupons. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the Metro Toronto Zoo discount tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple things to do in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do in Toronto, and at a bargain price thanks to the discount coupons.
