Ideas for Fathers Day 2013 in Toronto

Fathers’ Day is an annual summer event, prompting thoughts like “When is it Fathers’ Day? Can I still find gifts for Fathers’ Day? Who has fresh ideas for Fathers’ Day”?

(Updated June 11, 2014): Fathers Day 2014 arrives Sunday June 15. Many of these annual Toronto events return for 2014 Fathers Day. The official links (below) still work for: the Burlington Sound of Music on June 12-15, with fireworks to liven up the concerts; the Taste of Little Italy in Toronto; the Beach BBQ and Brews festival in Woodbine Park (if Toronto allows the vendors to park on the grass); and the NXNE festival lasts beyond the Fathers’ Day weekend. Afrofest 2014 makes you wait almost a month: July 5-6 at Woodbine Park in the Toronto Beach neighbourhood. See their new link, below.

Here’s some help for the 2013 Fathers’ Day in Toronto and beyond, with an update on June 6, 2013: see “An 1812…Fort York” below.

What Day is Fathers’ Day?

Fathers’ Day is the third Sunday of June. (You’ve missed Mothers’ Day; that was back in May).

When is Fathers’ Day 2013?

Celebrate 2013 Fathers’ Day on Sunday June 16. (My extended family tends to be relaxed about the exact day for celebrations, since they prefer to avoid crowds. Which leads to some of my ideas for Fathers’ Day in Toronto; read on).

Where to Celebrate the 2013 Fathers’ Day in Toronto

Let’s focus on music and food; here are a couple places to enjoy Fathers’ Day or the days leading up to it.

2013 NXNE in Toronto for Fathers’ Day

The 2013 NXNE has free music at Yonge Dundas Square in downtown Toronto. NXNE celebrates music, film and art from June 13-16, 2013 at a large variety of venues. (Naturally you’d take the subway here).

Here’s the music lineup for NXNE 2013 at Yonge Dundas Square on Fathers’ Day, June 16:

  • 3pm: Mickey Avalalon.
  • 4pm: Deniro Farrar.
  • 5pm: The Underachievers.
  • 6pm: Fat Tony.
  • 7pm: Smif N’ Wessun.
  • 8pm: Joey Bada$$.
  • 9pm: Big Boi.

As a bonus, Music Africa launches Afrofest with a performance for NXNE at the Gladstone Hotel on June 12. Afrofest takes over Woodbine Park in Toronto’s eastern Beach neighbourhood on July 6-7, 2013.

Among the many other venues for NXNE 2013 in Toronto is the Redpath Stage at Harbourfront at 235 Queen’s Quay West. I’ve got a soft spot for Harbourfront anyway, and it gave me an excuse to use a picture of a mariachi band I saw perform at the St. Clair O’Connor Community for a completely different event.

The 2013 Beach BBQ and Brews Festival for Fathers’ Day Weekend in Toronto

The 2013 Beach BBQ & Brews Festival at Woodbine Park offers three completely different musical styles on the June 14-16 weekend. It’s free to attend, but your father will expect you to buy the barbecue ribs and cold beer while you listen to the music.

On Fri. June 14, from 3:00 pm – 11:00 pm, the Beach BBQ features blues. From noon to 11pm on Sat. is the rock-and-roll lineup. The barbecue ends Sun. with reggae from noon to 8pm.

Woodbine Park is bounded by Coxwell Ave., Eastern Ave., Northern Dancer and Lake Shore Blvd. East. Take the 22 Coxwell bus south from the Danforth subway and exit at Queen St. East (or loop south onto Eastern); or the 501 Queen streetcar.

An 1812 Re-enactment at Fort York

(Added June 6, 2013): Fort York hosts two different re-enactments of local War of 1812 engagements on June 15 and 16, 2013. I doubt they will blow the roof off the fort as part of the retreat on Sunday. Each military re-enactment begins at 2:30 pm and ends about 45 minutes later.

Thanks to sponsorships, admission to Fort York is free on Fathers’ Day weekend. Fort York offers a very full schedule of events this weekend. This includes tours, artillery demonstrations, music, as well as shopping for period reproduction clothing and memorabilia.

Currently you can only enter Fort York from Garrison Road, through the west-bound lane of Fleet Street at Strachan. Take the 511 Bathurst streetcar south from the Bloor subway line.

A Taste of Little Italy for Fathers’ Day 2013

(Added June 15, 2013): The Taste of Little Italy runs Friday night (6pm-2am), Saturday (noon-2am) and Sunday (noon to 10pm) on Fathers’ Day Weekend 2013. This annual event closes College Street from Shaw to Bathurst streets.

Eat the food, hear the music and browse the artisans’ stalls.

Take the University subway to Queen’s Park station, then take the 506 College streetcar west to Bathurst. Or head south from the Bathurst station on the Bloor subway line.

Ideas for Fathers’ Day Gifts

We fathers are not sentimental fools, but it’s nice to be remembered. It’s easy to choose from a selection of Fathers’ Day cards, or even to send an e-card for Fathers’ Day. Check these ideas from Amazon.

(Updated June 11, 2014): For 2014, Canadians can buy the World’s Okayest Dad T Shirt; the American choice is the World’s Okayest Dad Coffee Mug. You missed out on 2013’s “World’s Best Dad Doormat” via Amazon: both the Canadian “Best Dad Doormat” or American “Best Dad Doormat” are not in stock today.

It’s really hard to imagine that your father needs a “Best Dad” tie, but that’s the traditional fall-back gift when you’ve run out of ideas.

A Fathers’ Day Burlington Bonus

(Added June 15, 2013): I just learned that the city of Burlington hosts its annual Sound of Music festival on the Fathers’ Day weekend. I missed the Friday opening and the Saturday morning parade for 2013, but check again next year.

From a quick scan of its comprehensive web site, this is a free music festival including a Saturday parade, and music at different outdoor venues.

Drive to Burlington via the QEW; exit onto North Shore Blvd, which becomes Lakeshore. Parking will be limited and some roads will be closed, so the GO Train is a brilliant alternative.

The Burlington Sound of Music Festival operates a shuttle bus between the Burlington Fairview GO station to the downtown John St. terminal. Or take the #2 South Burlington bus from the main Burlington GO station to the downtown bus terminal.

References for 2013 Fathers’ Day Events in Toronto

The official 2013 NXNE Toronto site has a lot more information, of course.

(Updated June 11, 2014): Afrofest 2014 has the current information. Here’s my older article, “Toronto Afrofest 2012 at Woodbine Park“.

The official “Beach BBQ & Brews Festival” is also worth visiting.

The two official links for the War of 1812 at Fort York are in that section.

The official Taste of Little Italy site is curiously sparse.

Here is the official Burlington Sound of Music Festival main page.
