The 2013 World Partnership Walk in Canada

The 2013 World Partnership Walk in Canada continues an annual fund-raising tradition to build long-term solutions to poverty in Africa and Asia. Ten Canadian cities will host Partnership Walks on three Sundays in May and June, 2013.

The World Partnership Walk is sponsored by the Aga Khan Foundation Canada, one of the most interesting Canadian non profit organizations around. The Foundation underwrites all the costs of hosting, so every donated dollar goes directly to the projects in Asia or Africa.

These projects support education, agriculture, grassroots economic development and health care.

The Aga Khan Foundation Canada supports projects in over a dozen countries. This non-denominational not for profit organization helps people regardless of their religion or ethnic background.

The World Partnership Walk has become an annual early summer event in Toronto as well as other Canadian cities.

Who is “the” Aga Khan?

The phrase, “Aga Khan”, may have begun as a nickname for Hasan Ali Shah, the 46th Imam of the Nizari Ismaili branch of Islam. However, it has persisted as an effective title through Aga Khan IV, Prince Shah Karim Al Hussein, the 49th Imam. This branch of Islam has a tradition of philanthropy, which is exemplified by the charitable and development work of the Aga Khan Foundation.

Fair Trade is One Way to Support Sustainable Economic Development

In my view, “fair trade” is a practical way for each of us to support sustainable economic development.

What is Fair Trade?

“Fair trade” has some detailed and technical definitions, but the main idea is simple.

Producers, such as farmers or artisans as individuals or working cooperatively, should sell their goods at a fair price, to non profit organizations who export and market these goods at a low mark-up. We consumers buy quality goods at reasonable prices; the middle organization survives without become wealthy; and the original producers make a decent living.

“Fair trade” is a lot better for the producers, who otherwise would probably lose their land and livelihood to major agri-business conglomerates. We’re better off, too, because a free market guides the prices rather than effective monopolies. Other than the agri-business executives, everyone wins.

Where Can I Buy Fair Trade Goods?

Buy fair trade foods via the Web, if you cannot get to a local fair trade retail outlet such as Ten Thousand Villages. In the USA, The Equal Exchange offers fair trade coffee, cocoa, chocolate, tea and an expanding line of fruit and nuts. They are a co-op firm, based in Maine. They work with a dozen faith-based partners, including Mennonite Central Committee USA (MCC USA); and with about forty farming partners from the Americas, Africa and Asia. Fair Trade empowers the small-fry producers, whether farmers or artisans, to conduct an export business that provides a decent living. We consumers in the USA or Canada pay a fair price, partly because the fair trade organizations minimize their costs and mark-ups.

What is Sustainable Development?

The term “sustainable development” indicates that economic activity can be sustained indefinitely.

A typical example would be mixed subsistence farming. The farmer rotates a grain crop with clover as cattle fodder. People eat the grain, and the soil gradually loses fertility. The clover fixes nitrogen into the soil, and the cattle’s dung also fertilizes the ground. The farmer keeps back some of the grain as seed for the next year’s planting; the cattle reproduce. That’s sustainable agriculture, although it wouldn’t produce huge economic rewards.

Non-sustainable agriculture might neglect the clover and cattle phase, or depend on fertilizer from a non-renewable source.

Sustainable economic development puts the focus on economics. Generally, this also means that each economic actor, whether producer or middle-man or consumer, must be involved, responsible and empowered. Neither slavery nor indentured servitude are sustainable, because either the slaves will revolt or their owners will replace them when a more amenable servant or robot comes along.

Looking for More Annual Toronto Events?

Do you crave more events in Toronto, including charity walks or fund-raising runs?

Things to do in Toronto

Check the “annual events” or “Toronto events” categories toward the end of the left-hand menu. We’d like to cover all Toronto summer attractions, and indeed all special events in Toronto; especially for Canadian holidays.

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including the Metro Toronto Zoo. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the zoo tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple things to do in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, Metro Toronto Zoo, Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do in Toronto, and at a bargain price!
