May Day 2013 in Toronto for Solidarity and Justice

The eighth annual May Day march in Toronto for solidarity and justice will be held on May 1st, 2013.

Why Attend the Toronto May Day Rally for Solidarity and Justice?

The May Day rally in Toronto supports a variety of organizations, in raising support for solidarity regarding several issues of national and international justice and fairness:

  • How Canada, and Toronto in particular, treat refugee claimants.
  • How Canada deals with its First Nations and indigenous peoples.
  • The working and living conditions of migrant workers and temporary workers.
  • Justice in labour relations.

The Toronto May Day march begins in Queen’s Park, from 1pm to 4pm.

The 5:30pm rally starts at Nathan Phillips Square, in front of Toronto City Hall on Queen Street.

The group will march to Little Norway Park, at Queen’s Quay and Bathurst Street. This location is directly opposite the Billy Bishop Island Airport, where Porter Airlines is in a labour dispute with some of its workers.

(The image shows an Afrofest celebration at Queen’s Park, some years ago, beneath the statue of King George IV. It’s not the most “iconic” picture of Queen’s Park, but I like the notion that people gather near a former monarch’s memorial).

How Far is the March for May Day 2013 in Toronto?

Using the online G-Map Pedometer, my estimate is that walking from the south end of Queen’s Park to Nathan Phillips Square is under 1.5Km (one mile!). From Queen’s Park to Little Norway Park is just over 4Km by the most obvious route that I’d use. That’s not a guarantee that the May Day Toronto organizers will be able to use the most direct route.

Remember that most “marches” and many races are 5Km in length.

When is the 2013 May Day March in Toronto?

The annual May Day march in Toronto is now held on the correct date, May 1st, regardless of the day of the week. So gather on Wed. May 1st, 2013 at Queen’s Park.

The first event, at Queen’s Park, begins at 1pm. The rally outside City Hall begins at 5:30pm.

Getting To and From the 2013 May Day Events in Toronto

The easiest way to reach Queen’s Park is the TTC’s College Street subway station on the  University section of the Yonge-University line.

Toronto City Hall is between the Osgoode and Queen stations on the same subway line; or take the 501 Queen Streetcar.

Normally there’s streetcar service at Bathurst and Queen’s Quay. The 511 Bathurst streetcar connects with the Bathurst station on the Bloor-Danforth line. The 509 Harbourfront streetcar normally follows Queen’s Quay, but if I read the service advisory correctly, you may need to walk north to Lake Shore Blvd to catch the replacement bus.

What is May Day?

“May Day”, the first day of May, has a long history as a European folk holiday, according to its Wikipedia entry.

My guess is that this May Day rally in Toronto aligns more with “International Workers’ Day”. That is also known as “May Day”, and also occurs on May 1st.

We Canadians officially celebrate Labour Day early in September, but it is indeed appropriate to rally on May Day to support international and justice issues, such as fair treatment for: migrant workers; indigenous peoples; refugee claimants; solidarity in the labour movement; and environmental concerns.
