Second Math Activity for Pi Day 2013

Pi Day is fast approaching. In mid March, how will you engage your students in learning about this important math constant?

You’d turn to my second Decoded Science article on this topic, “One Circular Math Activity for Pi Day“, of course.

Parents and students should read it too; and ask how the math teacher will mark this event. (Sweeten the deal by offering to bring “Pi Day Pie”).

(Added March 14, 2013): I’ve updated my first DeHaan Services article in this thread, “One Pi Day Math Activity is the Buffon Needle Drop“, with news about 2013 Pi Day activities at University of Toronto and also Ryerson University in Toronto, plus a pair of links to online comics celebrating Pi Day.

We’ve already published “The Buffon Needle Drop: a Math Activity for Pi Day“, as we’d publicized here in “One Pi Day Math Activity is the Buffon Needle Drop“. We have one more Pi Day activity article in the PIpeline; sorry about the pun.

I think it’s important for teachers to use hands-on mathematics activities; they help make math concepts clear and tangible.

Anyway, those articles already cover the important questions:

  • What is pi (π)?
  • When is Pi Day?
  • What is Pi Day?

Do Canadians Celebrate Pi Day? Other than Vanier College?

Once again I looked for Pi Day activities in Canada, but the only mention is still from Vanier College in Montreal, Quebec. (See my previous DeHaan Services article).

I still want to know whether other Canadians celebrate Pi Day; perhaps alongside of wishing Albert Einstein a happy birthday (although he’s deceased). Let me know, thanks.
