How Mennonite Beliefs Led to Persecution

During the time of the Protestant Reformation, the Anabaptists (who branched into Mennonite, Amish and other denominations) were persecuted for their beliefs and behaviours. Most states aligned themselves with particular Christian churches, such as Roman Catholic or Lutheran, and those denominations returned that favour with loyalty to their country.

The Mennonite belief was that Christians should be pacifists with their highest loyalty to God’s kingdom rather than a “worldly” ruler. (They would usually obey most laws and be good citizens in other respects). This divided loyalty, plus the refusal to take up arms against oppression, led to persecution.

Willemsz was famous, neither for escaping from jail nor for battling his pursuers, but rather for saving the life of the guard who was chasing him.

The 1995 Mennonite Confession does, in my opinion, uphold the same beliefs in pacifism and loyalty to God above country that led Willemsz to his demise. Would he have been willing to help someone persecuting him in the 21st century, and would the 1995 Confession of Faith ask that of him? I think the answers are “yes” and “yes”.
