Tommy Thompson Butterfly or 2012 Aloha Festival in Toronto

Hopefully it’s better tardy than never to briefly mention two festivals in Toronto over the August 24-26 weekend in 2012.

The only day for Toronto’s Butterfly Festival at Tommy Thompson Park is Saturday August 25, 2012. The events run from 10am to 3pm; it is entirely free to enter the sanctuary, park your car, or to participate.

Unfortunately, it seems that all the activities that require registration are already fully booked. I apologize for not putting this on my “must blog” list from last year.

However, Tommy Thompson Park is available year-round for recreational cyclists, runners, hikers and photographers; but only on weekends. They forbid pets, so as to keep the wildlife safe.

The venue is fondly known as the Leslie Street Spit. The best way to find it is to bicycle on the Martin Goodman Trail. Alternatively, drive to Lake Shore Blvd East, turn south on Leslie, and park in the lot just beyond the gate.

Just a note for cyclists. Speed bumps of varying sizes are placed on the road, so keep your eyes open for them.

To be on the safe side, bookmark the official “Tommy Thompson Park Butterly Festival” web site and make a reminder to check it early next August.

The First Aloha Toronto Festival

A new summer Toronto event is the Toronto 2012 Aloha Festival.

The triple guiding principles seem to be:

  • Support research and treatment for autism.
  • Enjoy stand-up paddling, whether recreationally or competitively.
  • Have fun at a luau.

The events run Friday August 24 through Sunday the 26th, 2012. Two locations are the Balmy Beach Club and the Boardwalk Pub. (The site says “Boardwalk Place”; check with them before heading off to a misadventure).

The Toronto Aloha Festival raises funds for the Sick Kids Hospital Foundation and for Surfers Healing: the specific condition is autism.

The Surfers Healing camp for autistic children is the unique opportunity for Saturday or Sunday. It seems Saturday is fully booked already, but Sunday still allows online registration.

Their official site is “Aloha Toronto“; check it for the detailed schedule and costs for Friday night, Saturday or Sunday.

Special Thanks for Preliminary Research for these Toronto Summer Events

Thanks to the paper edition of “The Mirror” of Aug. 23, 2012 for writing up these two festivals.
