Toronto Ashkenaz Festival 2012 at Harbourfront or BuskerFest?

Well, why not attend both the Toronto Ashkenaz Festival 2012 at Harbourfront, as well as BuskerFest, in late August?

(Updated Aug. 19, 2013): See “How to Find the 2013 Toronto Buskerfest” for important updates both about Buskerfest 2013 and also that the Askenaz Festival at Harbourfront will be delayed until August 2014.

(Updated May 8, 2013): The Ashenaz Foundation partners with the Committee for Yiddish to present the “Annual Summer Yiddish Concert” in Toronto at the Randolph Theatre on June 19, 2013. Anthony Russell is the featured artist. Details are still sketchy early in May 2013, but you can check the Ashkenaz Festival Toronto page for the summer 2013 Yiddish concert in Toronto.

(Updated Aug. 29, 2012):  I have three further suggestions for “The End of Summer 2012 Labour Day Weekend in Toronto“.

The 2012 Toronto Ashkenaz Festival hosted at Harbourfront

The Ashkenaz Festival returns to Harbourfront in Toronto from Aug. 28 through Sept. 3, 2012. It features a variety of arts, including dance, music and vocal. There are discussions on literature, cinema screenings as well as drawings on display.

The 2012 Ashkenaz Festival is actually hosted at a variety of venues, including the Enwave Theatre, the WestJet Stage, the Brigantine Room at Harbourfront, the Music Garden and more.

The Ashkenaz Festival celebrates the culture of the Jewish people. The most specific reference for “Ashenaz” is to those who had practiced Judaism in central Germanic Europe from about the time of the Middle Ages. The distinction is drawn with the Mizrahi (Middle East, North Africa and the Caucasus regions); Sephardi (linked to Iberia, meaning Portugal and Spain); or Yemeni (historically linked to living in Yemen) groups. (My research, alas, is only from half a dozen Wikipedia articles; it seems there would be a mountain of material to discuss each group’s unique heritage as well as the traits common in Judaism).

There are far too many specific events for me to list here. Besides, that’s a job for the schedule on the official site (linked below). Each performance or event is listed; click its button for more details.

Make the Most of the Online Ashkenaz Festival Schedule

Here’s a hint before you click that official link to the Ashkenaz Festival. On the schedule’s main page, look at the right-hand column for a menu of sort-and-select options. If you only have a specific date in mind, hover your mouse over “Aug. 28 – Sept. 3, 2012” and then click your specific date when it pops up. The page jumps down to the events for that date.

The next choice is more useful. Hover the mouse over “Toronto, Ontario” in the right column’s menu. Click on, perhaps, “15 Music Garden”. Then only the Lerner and Moguilevsky Duo is shown.

The events are colour-coded. If you had clicked the blue “Kids-Family” menu, then only those performances will be shown.

Finally, and most importantly for me: “Ticket Type” allows the thrifty to select only the free events: about 75 at my quick tally.

May I congratulate the web designer for making these selections possible.

Toronto Buskerfest 2012 as an Additional Festival

“Fireboy, a Busker in Toronto Buskerfest 2009” by Loozrboy

Last year’s BuskerFest Toronto was one of my first subjects for these “Toronto events” articles.

It’s back for August 23-26, 2012; so it starts and ends just before the Ashkenaz Festival. I’d say “Thank you for not causing a scheduling conflict” to both organizations, if I were you.

(Updated Aug. 3, 2013): BuskerFest Toronto moves to Yonge Street in 2013. The rest of this section is out-of-date.

BuskerFest is again in the St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood. My previous article, “How to Find Toronto Buskerfest 2011“, gave pretty good directions if you have any questions. It’s a nice walk east from Union Station.

BuskerFest in Toronto continues to support Epilepsy Ontario. The festival will ask you to directly contribute a token amount to the charity. As well, performers will strongly encourage you to tip them since that’s how they earn their living. Might I add, they are such great performers that they deserve some of your cash!
