Every year, Ontario’s finest young athletes compete in their different sports under the umbrella of the Ontario Summer Games. This year, it is Toronto’s turn to host these young men and women in archery, baseball and softball, basketball, fencing, lacrosse, soccer and more.

While just a few sports start or end sooner, the vast majority are contested from August 17-19, 2012.

Most of the venues are in Toronto. To name a few: Ashbridge’s Bay in the eastern Beaches hosts Beach Volleyball and the Sailing regatta; York University has Basketball, Karate and Rugby; Lamport Stadium boasts Field Hockey; and there are others.

The only out-of-town venues are: the Welland International Flatwater Centre in Welland for Canoe and Kayak; the Albion Hills Conservation Centre in Caledon for Mountain Biking; the Oshawa Skeet and Gun Club in Oshawa for Skeet Shooting; the Maple Leaf Marksmen’s Club in St. Catharines hosts Sporting Rifle; and Triathlon will be at Professor’s Lake in Brampton.

My DeHaan Fitness article, “Sample Some Sports at Ontario Summer Games 2012 in Toronto” lists all the events, with their dates and venues. Check there first to decide which sports you’d like to watch. Remember that a few competitions, including Golf, start or end earlier than Aug. 17-19, 2012.

My article also links to the official site, where you can find the exact schedules, learn more about the rules for each competition, and read selected athletes’ biographies.

The point of my articles is to raise awareness of this one-time Toronto event, hoping that we can be inspired to improving our personal fitness by seeing our younger athletes competing at a high level. Besides, its a free sports spectacle (unless some venues have hidden plans to charge admission…and the organizers haven’t told me one way or the other). Finally, these teen-agers deserve to have a cheering section. I’d like to see you at one of these sporting events at Toronto’s 2012 Ontario Summer Games.
