IRIE Music Festival Adjusts to Toronto Violence for Simcoe Day 2012

The annual TD IRIE Music Festival celebrates Caribbean, reggae and related music in two cities: in Mississauga in mid-July, and in Toronto around the Simcoe Day holiday weekend that starts the month of August.

In 2012, however, recent gun violence in Toronto has led the IRIE Festival organizers to make adjustments.

The focus for my blog is free or fascinating annual events in Toronto, so I missed the free IRIE concerts in Mississauga Celebration Square. As well, this article will neglect the IRIE Music Awards, to be held Aug. 2nd. Feel free to follow the link to the official IRIE Toronto web site below.

IRIE 2012 at Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto on August 3-6

Three performers headline the shows at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto, beginning on Aug. 3, 2012. It’s the famous square in front of “new city hall”, at Queen and Bay Streets.

IRIE Postponed the Yonge-Dundas Square Concerts for Aug. 4-5, 2012

The TD IRIE Music Festival, in light of the recent gun violence in Toronto, postponed the Yonge-Dundas Square concerts which would have featured world music by artists such as Renee ‘Shi’ Wilson.

The Globe and Mail reported that the IRIE organizers’s would shift these events “to later in the year”. This shifts the concerts away from the Aug. 4th and 5th dates which would have been squarely in the Simcoe Day weekend.

The official press release says that the Toronto IRIE performers who had been slated for Yonge-Dundas Square will instead “be given an opportunity to perform at theĀ Urban Music Festival which will be held in Toronto fromĀ November 1 through 4, 2012“.
