The junior version of “Toronto Caribana 2012” caught me by surprise, believing that it would not begin until about July 14. Mea culpa, it’s my fault for not planning farther ahead.

The new name, “Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival”, reflects the sponsor and the new organization for what had been Caribana Toronto for many years. I plan to write another article for the adult version of Toronto Caribana 2012, since the Toronto Caribbean Festival deserves a lot of publicity.

The junior version of the “Caribbean parade Toronto” gives the younger generation the opportunity to participate fully in parades and costumes, without the pressure of competing with adults for all the attention.

Overall, the Toronto Caribbean Carnival is perhaps the most popular of all summer Toronto events, bringing in influx of international tourists to the GTA, as well as awakening the latent Caribbean spirit in the locals.

  • The opening church service, presumably available for adult as well as junior participants, will be held at the Revival Time Tabernacle on Sunday July 15 from 4-6:30pm. The location is 4340 Dufferin Street.
  • The overall launch for the Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival will be held at Nathan Phillips Square, aka “City Hall”, on Tuesday July 17 from noon to 2pm. Although intended for adults, I can’t imagine children being barred from the square.

Junior Carnival and Family Day

The 2012 Junior Carnival Toronto will be on the 21st of July, 2012, at Downsview Park.

The parade is scheduled to start at 11am and continue until 2pm. “Family Day” follows seamlessly, no doubt, until closing at 8pm.

The Junior Toronto Caribbean parade route mainly uses John Drury Drive, which cuts Sheppard Ave. West just east of Keele Street. This is inside of Downsview Park. Be prepared to see Chevrolet prominently featured as the presenter for these festivities.

All the events noted here are free, according to the official Caribbean Festival Toronto site.
