Find Free TO2015 PanAm Events in Toronto or the GTA

Where can I find find free TO2015 PanAm Events in Toronto or in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area)? I had wanted to write about this before the start of the PanAm Games, but the official information was not as clear as I’d wanted.

Now that major news sources, such as CBC and the Toronto Star, have covered this topic, here are some more hints. When you find something of interest, follow the links near the end of the article for official details.

Free PanAm Events for TO2015

You can buy tickets for downtown Toronto events such as triathlon and marathon, but parts of these races go outside the venues at the CNE grounds or Ontario Place. You can watch free PanAm sports events on the parts of the course outside the PanAm facilities. It may be tricky to get there; I’d probably bicycle and then walk the bike where it’s crowded.

Still in downtown Toronto, head to Queen’s Quay for sailing’s preliminary races. Sugar Beach is the most central location, but there are other spots along Queen’s Quay with a view of parts of the harbour. Take along your binoculars! The sailing regatta is a non-ticketed event.

Time trials for road cycling are held in Milton, Ontario; you can watch for free.

I’d noticed a comment in Reddit/toronto that it was possible to watch figure roller skating for free through a chain-link fence at the PAC (University of Toronto Scarborough’s outdoor field area, which is part of the PanAm Aquatic Centre). However, that event is over.

Remember that the TO2015 ParaPan competitions in August will showcase athletes with every bit the same grit and determination as those competing in the PanAm games without those physical challenges.

The combined PanAm Games and ParaPan Games offer once-in-a-lifetime Toronto summer events; and some are free.

Free Music and Thrills for TO2015

The Panamania celebrations are in full swing at a number of sites. Toronto loves free music; find a convenient location and enjoy it.

I’d run past the PanAm zip line at Harbourfront on Queen’s Quay; apparently that’s also a free thrill for the fans!

Looking for More Events in Toronto Canada?

My blog tracks many of the annual Toronto events that I find interesting, free or frugal. Here’s something of special interest for tourists in Toronto.

CityPASS offers discount tickets to Toronto attractions, including Metro Toronto Zoo coupons. You buy the voucher online, print it and take it to your first destination; let’s say it’s the zoo. They give you the coupon booklet but remove the Metro Toronto Zoo discount tickets. Visit the next four attractions, where helpful staff relieve your booklet of tickets but leave you with the rest of the information. You save over $40 by spending about $70. The voucher is good for almost two years, but you have to use all the discount admission tickets within nine days. This is terrific for tourists looking for multiple things to do in Toronto, or for a hometown stay-cation: use discount tickets to Casa Loma, the CN Tower, the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum in a nine day adventure. That’s five things to do while vacationing in Toronto Canada, and at a bargain price thanks to the discount coupons.
