Doors Open or a Small Space for Paintings in Spring 2015 in the Beach

Decisions, decisions, decisions in Toronto’s Eastern Beaches this spring weekend! Should you enter a small space for small paintings, or walk through some open doors? Why not do both?

One art show worth seeing in the Beach neighbourhood is Small Paintings for Small Spaces, in the Gardener’s Cottage in Kew Beach. The Beach Guild of Fine Art presents some thirty artists, who manage to squeeze their works into this cottage.

Admission is free, although the paintings are for sale. There’s even a lucky draw… which is more than you’d find at Toronto Doors Open, I wager.

The exhibit runs Friday – Sunday, May 22-24, 2015. (Friday from 3-8pm; on the weekend, from 10am-5pm). Kew Gardens is on the south side of Queen St. East, well east from Woodbine Ave. but west of Main St. I’d take the 501 Queen streetcar.

Toronto Doors Open 2015 in the Beach Neighbourhood

Before or after viewing those small paintings, take a peek behind the usually closed doors in some of the buildings in east Toronto’s Beach neighbourhood. Doors Open is another annual spring event in Toronto; I recommend picking an area and working your way through different buildings without going too far.

The RC Harris water filtration plant, or “The Palace of Purity”, is another amazing place for Doors Open. It truly should be on everyone’s bucket list. The exterior is Art Deco; the site is gorgeous, looking down from Queen Street; and the interior is stunningly industrial.

It is helpful for the person and generika viagra cialis may take longer to affect a cure but instead a short term solution. This can be a online cialis no prescription painful experience to go through. Kamagra, a generic version of tadalafil 5mg is widely preferred than the genuine one. He can help you to achieve your goal of cheap levitra tablet giving up cigarette and have more fun in the bedroom! Even through erectile dysfunction is not a life-threatening condition it can compromise well-being and quality of life.

The RC Harris doors are open 10am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Staff will answer questions, but you are free to guide yourself. It’s just east and south of the Neville Park end of the 501 Streetcar line. (Again, really, it’s just a short walk downhill from the streetcar turnaround point).

The second open door I would enter is at Fire Station 227, on Queen St. just east of Woodbine. (Hmm… that sounds like Kew Gardens, but the fire station is barely a stone’s throw from Woodbine). It’s open from  10am-5pm both Saturday and Sunday. The clock tower is an iconic feature of this section of the Beach. Plus, they will let you tour the building and gawk at a fire truck, assuming it’s not putting out fires somewhere.

Speaking of industrial buildings, the new Portlands Energy Centre (at 470 Unwin Ave.) is quite the sight. It’s about 2Km from Leslie and Commissioners, but the 83 Jones bus still gets down there despite the construction at Leslie and Lakeshore. Try biking the Martin Goodman trail instead. (Updated May 23, 2015): Or drive to the entrance at the east side of the property. The bike path through Clark Beach Park (“Cherry Beach”) has been paved, or asphalted, and it’s not fenced off. It’s a pleasure to use that section of the trail again! One sign still advises you to use Unwin Ave., and there’s no centre line marking yet; but I wasn’t the only person using the trail in that park.

Sticking with the industrial theme, let’s wrap up with the TTC subway yard on Greenwood Ave. Of the Doors Open locations I’ve mentioned here, it’s the only one to offer a children’s activity area… and train rides for the whole family. This rail  only open to the public on Saturday from 11am-5pm.

Finding the 2015 Victoria Day Fireworks in Toronto

Where can you find Victoria Day Fireworks in Toronto this year?  One venue offers a free fireworks display as an annual Toronto event; and there’s another where you can pay to watch a day earlier.

Either way, celebrating Victoria Day is an annual spring event in Toronto that brings all of us together to “ooh and aah” at the bursts of fiery colour.

Victoria Day Fireworks at Ashbridges Bay: an Annual Toronto Event

Ashbridges Bay, in the eastern Beaches area, hosts an annual fireworks display every Victoria Day. This is on the true statutory holiday, Monday May 18, 2015.

Keep these five key points in mind to fully enjoy this event:

  • Arrive early. The fireworks should start at 9:45pm. Plan to be on site by 9pm at the latest. Here’s why:
  • The streets and sidewalks will be packed. The nearest streets are usually closed; and every parking spot will be full long before you arrive.
  • The TTC will do a great job, but the 22 Coxwell bus won’t push aside the cars in its way. Nor will the 501 Queen streetcars.
  • Lots of families will walk with their young children.
  • Bring a jacket; wear comfy shoes. If you spend a few daylight hours at the beach, protect yourself from sunburn.

The ever-alert Beaches Living Guide includes this annual Toronto event in their current Beaches Living Guide events listing.

Victoria Day Fireworks at Canada’s Wonderland

Canada’s Wonderland also presents fireworks on several annual holidays; but they choose Sunday night, May 17, 2015 to honour the British monarch’s birthday. Yes, you may celebrate 2015 Victoria Day early!

The fireworks start around 10pm, at Wonder Mountain. If you visit Canada’s Wonderland for the day, be aware that some rides may close early for safety reasons. Of course you have to pay to enter the site.

If you need to learn more about Canada’s Wonderland, their “Fireworks at Canada’s Wonderland” page should be a good starting point.

Toronto Museums for Mothers’ Day

The absolutely cheapest option among Toronto museums for Mothers’ Day in Toronto is the Scarborough Museum. They offer a pay-what-you-can entry fee. The Scarborough Museum claims that every Saturday and Sunday in May is Mothers’ Day; so if you miss May 10, 2015, just visit 1007 Brimley Road on some other weekend. This museum features a log home and a farmhouse in Thompson Memorial Park, so it’s a great spot for a walk in the spring.

Eating out is another traditional option for Mothers’ Day. But remember that every pancake house will be filled to overflowing by mothers having Sunday brunch with their families. Consider the Mothers’ Day Tea at the Gibson House museum instead. They have sittings at noon and 2:30pm for $25/person plus tax. You must make reservations for your tea and scones by calling 416-395-7432416-395-7432 . Gibson House is at 5172 Yonge St., a bit north of Mel Lastman Square. It’s easy to get there by TTC; exit the #1 Yonge subway line at the North York station and cross the first street to the north.

Speaking of tea, the Montgomery’s Inn Tea & Tour runs from 1-4pm on May 10, 2015. $10 plus tax buys afternoon tea with scones, preserves, tarts, and a tour to walk off the calories. This is “first come, first served” but you might call 416-394-8113416-394-8113 for information. Montgomery’s Inn is at 4709 Dundas St. West (just east of Islington).

Try the Mom Show for Mothers’ Day in Mississauga

Canada’s National Mom Show‘s claim to fame is that it’s a family-friendly event with a focus on celebrating motherhood while offering activities for small children. It’s a one-day event, and yes it is on Mothers’ Day, May 10, 2015. Drive your mother, or your wife and children, to the International Centre (6900 Airport Road in Mississauga); the event runs from 10am to 6pm. The site lists the performance schedule on several stages (including special activities and performances for your children). Adults may be more interested in the fashion shows, parenting and health tips, or how to make smoothies or baked goods for the family.

They only accept cash at the gate, but tickets are $20/adult, $10/child, and they offer family passes which effectively get your second child in for free.
