Selected 2015 New Year Levees in Toronto

The French instituted the Levée (“risen”) as a ritual for the favoured to help the king get up in the morning. In the New World, many politicians and vice-regal dignitaries hold a New Year Levée to greet the public. Where in Toronto can you shake hands with our nouveau nobility early in 2015, as this annual winter Toronto event continues?

Remember: it’s free to attend, and check the links to the official pages for details about additional entertainment. As a rule, an indoor reception is pretty quiet; outdoor skating tends to include family-friendly music.

The 2015 Queen’s Park Levée with Lieutentant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell

Join our new Lieutentant Governor of Ontario, Elizabeth Dowdeswell, in the vice-regal suite at Queen’s Park on Thurs. Jan. 1, 2015 from noon-2pm. I’d take the TTC to Queen’s Park. The 506 Carlton streetcar stop is at University and College; it’s a quick walk north to the legislature.

Then take a brisk walk south to Toronto City Hall.

Toronto Mayor John Tory to Hold an Icy Levée at Nathan Phillips Square

Toronto Mayor John Tory’s 2015 Levée will be held on Jan. 1 from 2-3:30pm on New Year’s Day at Nathan Phillips Square. This brings to partial fruition an idea floated by former mayor Rob Ford, to skate on the outdoor rink. Apparently Mayor Tory will also shake hands indoors at City Hall, as well as skating in the square.

Mayor Tory will return to City Hall from his midnight countdown at the New Year’s Eve party.

Toronto City Hall is at Bay and Queen; I’d take the TTC downtown for this event if I weren’t already at Queen’s Park.

I suspect some other downtown Toronto Councillors plan to join this skating levée.

Deferred 2015 New Year Levées with Other Toronto Councillors

Head to the East York Civic Centre on Sunday Jan. 4 from 1-3pm for the East York New Year’s Levée, with some councillors as well as young musicians sponsored by the Beaches International Jazz Festival. Thank goodness Councillor Mary Fragedakis posted this; I’d also read somewhere that Janet Davis will attend as well.

On Saturday Jan. 10, Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon and MPP Arthur Potts will hold a joint Levée at the Naval Club (1910 Upper Gerrard at Woodbine) from 2-4pm.

That’s the same date and time as Councillor Paul Ainslie’s New Year Levée, but I didn’t find the location in the left-hand menu on his page.

A year or so ago, Scarborough councillors cut out this annual Toronto tradition; I have not found notices for the others by my self-imposed deadline. If any readers can send me a link to more news for their area, I would publish gratefully.

Mississauga Mayor to Host Levée on New Year’s Day

Newly elected Mayor Bonnie Crombie will host her 2015 New Year Levée at City Hall and Celebration Square in Mississauga. The indoor ceremony begins at 2pm; but outdoor skating will be available too.

2014 New Years Eve Fireworks in Toronto or the GTA

We all love fireworks, but where can we see fireworks in Toronto or the GTA at a 2014 New Year’s Eve party? Let’s cut right to the chase for Dec. 31, 2014. (Updated Dec. 31, 2014 with a few transit notes).

Fireworks at the Nathan Phillips New Year’s Eve Celebration in Toronto

This official Toronto City Hall web page does not mention City-TV, who used to host this event. Still, I’d rate this as the best-known annual Toronto winter event.

Skate from 8pm-10pm; rent skates if you don’t want to carry a pair until next year. Drummers and jugglers will keep the non-skaters entertained until the main stage show at 10pm. Live music continues until Mayor John Tory counts down to midnight and fireworks.

One hint from previous years: check the perimeter for fences and gates. If you want to leave before the crowd, stay near an exit rather than try to swim against the flow.

Take the TTC to Queen and Bay. Remember that TTC service is free on New Year’s Eve from 7pm through 4am on New Year’s Day. Taxpayers may rejoice that Corby Spirit and Wine is the sponsor covering the cost of all rides.

As always, the Toronto New Year’s Eve party at Nathan Phillips square is outdoors, free of charge and officially free of intoxicants.

I’ve just checked City TV’s schedule for Dec. 31: they will cover Dick Clark’s New Years Rockin’ Eve from New York City, even if the former American Bandstand host met his demise in 2012. (The link will be out of date early in 2015!).

Two New Year’s Eve Fireworks Shows at Niagara Falls

Head to Queen Victoria Park in Niagara Falls on Dec. 31, 2014 for a pair of fireworks shows at 8pm and midnight. Again, this is a free show. I’d recommend staying at a Niagara Falls hotel rather than driving back to Toronto. Or check with GO schedule for free rides this evening; although it does not mention Niagara Falls on that page. The last GO bus from Niagara Falls barely gives you time for the 8pm fireworks.

Here’s my map highlighting Queen Victoria Park in Niagara Falls. (Click the map, and then click the next image, to get a larger version).

New Year’s Eve Fireworks in the GTA

Brampton’s City Hall is the venue for midnight fireworks on Dec. 31, 2014. Oh, all right, the show is actually outdoors in Ken Whillans Square.

Naturally, Mississauga hosts fireworks in Celebration Square (300 City Centre Drive). Yes, naturally the fireworks start at midnight, after music and skating.

Newmarket gets an early start with fireworks at 9pm at the Magna Centre, 800 Mulock Drive. The evening includes a choice of skating or swimming… and I hope that’s an indoor pool.

Apparently each transit service in the GTA offers free rides from some time on New Year’s Eve; check with your local transit authority for the details.

The GTA offers other family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebrations beyond fireworks; let’s thank To Do Canada for rounding up these Fireworks and Family Events for Toronto and the GTA. For one example, skate from 8pm-1am at the Natrel Rink at Harbourfront in Toronto.

Previewing One Example of Applied Geometry

(Updated Jan. 7, 2015) We finally published “Green Math: How to Apply Geometry to a Square Foot Garden” in Decoded Plants. Perhaps I was right to highlight these images. The editor rejected my adaptation of Toby Hudson’s circles, but hand-crafted some original art in its place. As well, fellow writer Chris Eirschele kindly offered several images of actual container gardens to show what one can do within a limited plot of land. Finally, I didn’t even include the “square root of 2” image, since it didn’t really add that much for a gardening perspective.

Here’s a preview of images I made for an upcoming article about applied geometry. Now that my article is published, I’ve shared the link and further details. (End of update).

Why preview these images? The act of publishing them first on my own online site establishes copyright.

Most of the work was done by Toby Hudson, who published it online under a Creative Commons license. My work was to capture a screen-print of all these images, and then crop the image and add a border. Hopefully the finished article will show it as a larger image so it will be easier to read.

Perhaps it’s obvious that my article will focus on how to pack circles into a unit square as efficiently as possible.

Pythagorean Theorem for an Isosceles Triangle

"Square Root of Two in Square Foot Garden by Pythagorean Theorem" image by Mike DeHaan
“Square Root of Two in Square Foot Garden by Pythagorean Theorem” image by Mike DeHaan

I drew this image in MS Paint to illustrate a 1-1-root(2) triangle. Per the Pythagorean Theorem, the length of the longest side is the square root of the sum of the squares of the other two sides.

Since the outside edges of the square have a length of “1 unit”, the diagonal of the square is the hypoteneuse of a 1-1-√2 right-angle isosceles triangle.

The Pythagorean Theorem says that hyp^2 = side_one^2 + side_two^2. Since each side has length of 1, hyp^2 = 1 +  1 = 2. So the length of the hypoteneuse = the square root of 2 = √2, or about 1.4.

Red Circles Do Not Quite Fit Inside the Square

“3 Circles Too Large for a Unit Square”. Copyright image by Mike DeHaan.

I wanted to fit three circles along the diagonal of this square. They fit along the diagonal, but bulge out beyond the sides of the square.

Obviously the circles did not fit perfectly along the diagonal either. I had converted the unit square from feet to inches, because the article is mainly aimed at readers in the USA. The square root calculation rounded more closely to 5.6 inches, so I rounded down to 5½. The red circles would have bulged out even more had I been more careful with the fraction-of-an-inch!

I used MS Paint to crop these images and add a border. At first, I’d forgotten to doctor the image after moving it from the camera to my computer. I was surprised that the original image of the green circles was “too large” to be uploaded to this site; but it had accepted the original red circle image.

I could have changed the WordPress parameters for my site, to allow larger images. However, I would have cropped them both anyway. There was just no need to include so much of the “landscape” that the camera captured.

Green Circles Fit the Square

"3 Circles Fitting into a Unit Square". Copyright image by Mike DeHaan. These green circles do indeed fit inside the square. Unfortunately, they don’t reach to the corners of the square.

I wonder whether that will become a sore point with the readers who want to apply this geometry to their practical situation. Perhaps there will be feedback for that article.
